Obama seeks faster phaseout of popular coolant in effort to curb greenhouse gases

The Obama administration is preparing to introduce major steps to phase out production of a popular chemical coolant used in refrigerators and air conditioners, citing growing evidence that the substance is contributing to the warming of the planet.

The White House will announce on Tuesday a series of voluntary commitments by some of the country’s largest chemical firms and retailers to move rapidly away from R-134a and similar compounds used in nearly every office, home and automobile in the country, according to current and former U.S. officials familiar with the effort.

I am not familiar with the name Puron, is that a brand name for R-134a? R-134a was mandated to replace Freon and the general consensus at the time was that it had far more to do with the expiration of a patent than with any real environmental danger. It seems very strange that now they want to outlaw R-134a just about the time the patent should be running out on it. I am not a scientist either but I am 70 years old and have seen this movie before.

Is there any possibility that the manufacturers of this new refrigerant are BLDs (Big Lib Donors)?
Wondering.

I see your point, mine though is that they are mandating a known inflammable agent to be placed into our homes that use A.C. or Heat pumps for heating and cooling. Those systems DO develop leaks due to the high pressure the refrigerant is under. A leak in the ‘right’ spot will burn down your home.

Sure you can say that about Gasoline in cars too, or natural gas stoves and heating units. But many people switched over to heat pumps to get away from pilot lamps and/or the other hazards of using those systems.

On the other-other hand I was told many years ago that the reason that R12 was phased out is because the maker that held the patent was about to lose their monopoly over the manufacture of the refrigerant so they ‘colluded’ with the environmental movement to come up with a ‘reason’ to make us all switch over to a different refrigerant.

A "faster phaseout" of the wØn would be preferable!

This is BS...

The reason the gov’t is requiring a switch in coolant is that the patent rights to R22/R12 have run out.

mercedes did fill some cars with 1234, and recalled them all after engine fires were caused by tiny refrigerant leaks

Oh, that's nice! At least when Freon contacted flame, it just produced Phosgene gas in low concentration.

I think when DuPont's patent on R-12 was due to expire, they called on their contacts in government to use the environmental activists to generate a call for a replacement refrigerant, conveniently manufactured by DuPont.

What seals the deal to me is seeing the same action for the same product by the same people.

DuPont should have stuck to providing rifle propellant for the government. Where does one think DuPont's government influence came from in the first place? I'd bet in no small part, myself...

And anyone remember when ammonia was used as a refrigerant? Get a leak in that system--nasty stuff!

Yes, largest ammonia system I ever saw was at the Coors Brewery in Golden, CO. May have been an absorber system. Don't know if they still use it.

The refrigerant they want to replace R134 with is highly flammable!

Replacing safe, simple light bulbs with mercury-filled CFLS. Banning DDT for alleged safety reasons, making it harder to destroy pests and reduce the spread of disease. Replacing Freon with R134, and now R134 with a flammable chemical.

Legislating and regulating us to death.

yes it’s refrigerant..but they know everything u know! but i have heard other people call it “coolant” for some reason, maybe because it makes the system “cool” idk

nothing has cooled like R12 cooled imo...but yes they say it was destroying the big O so then went to R134, NOW that is dangerous : / it’s always something and will never stop!

If I remember correctly, F12 was banned because it was eating a hole in the Ozone over Australia.

The rumor mill said it was really banned because it’s patent was expiring and the company (Du Pont)that owned it didn’t want others making it, so they led the fear charge to replace R12 with R134.

Maybe R134 is now about to expire.
