Student put in detention for sharing school lunch

An eighth grade student from Weaverville Elementary School got a detention slip for sharing his school prepared lunch Tuesday.

Kyle Bradford, 13, shared his chicken burrito with a friend who didn’t like the cheese sandwich he was given by the cafeteria.

Bradford didn’t see any problem with sharing his food.

"It seemed like he couldn't get a normal lunch so I just wanted to give mine to him because I wasn't really that hungry and it was just going to go in the garbage if I didn't eat it," said Bradford.

But the Trinity Alps Unified School District has regulations that prohibit students from sharing their meals.

The policies set by the district say that students can have allergies that another student may not be aware of.

Tom Barnett, the Superintendent of the Trinity Alps Unified School District says that hygiene issues also come into play when banning students from sharing meals.

"We have a policy that prohibits students from exchanging meals. Of course if students are concerned about other students not having enough to eat we would definitely want to consider that, but because of safety and liability we cannot allow students to actually exchange meals," said Barnett.

Bradford’s mother Sandy Bradford thinks that her son did the right thing by sharing his lunch. She also believes that it isn’t up to the school to discipline her son for good manners.

“By all means the school can teach them math and the arithmetic and physical education, but when it comes to morals and manners and compassion, I believe it needs to start at home with the parent,” Sandy said.

Bradford says that he would definitely share his lunch again if a friend wanted a portion of his meal.

For now, Sandy, you're allowed to believe that.

However, don't think for a second that the school shares your belief. They will teach your child their "morals," their "manners," and their "compassion," and you can do nothing about it as long as your child attends THEIR school.

I am betting that it has much more to do with the liability than the safety.

If the school district does not have a middle school or junior high, it is considered a elementary school.

So, the kid receiving the meal freely and willfully has no idea that he has allergies and what to avoid? There’s no liability for oneself anymore, we can’t make any decisions or take responsibility for our actions anymore, we’re too stupid for that?

Wait, you don’t have to answer... The sad truth is that the answer to most of what I ask is yes, in general we as a people in the US have been so dumbed down by our rulers that we are too stupid to think for ourselves. We let this happen (the US as a whole, not conservatives per se).

For most Americans, the answer is that they will put up with anything . . . just to keep the free food coming. In fact, I'll bet only a tiny handful of parents in this particular school have a problem with the kid being disciplined.

Trading and sharing food was a primary activity at lunch in gradeschool. Great negotiating lessons learned. Also bonding and friendship skills. Cant have that!

Why did one kid get a burrito and another kid get a cheese sandwich? It says both were school prepared lunches. MO’s Food Police deciding, individually, what each kid will eat??

We [as a Nation] put up with obamacare. That should answer your question. It probably not the answer that you liked or wanted, but it is what it is.

Parents obsess over allergies these days and tell EVERYONE about them. So I am pretty sure a 13/14 year old would know whether or not be was allergic to a chicken burrito!

BTW, if the kid does not have to carry an epi pen or an inhaler, they are going to be fine! God! Yes I have allergies but I don't demand that everyone conform their behavior so that I don't get a freaking hive!

Good for Bradford. My comment for and to the school authorities would get me banned.

Hey, the school could have been breaking up a budding bromance.

Where are the happy advocates?
