Kurdish Peshmerga forces have announced that they are ready to help their brethren across Syria, who have faced fierce attacks from Islamic State (IS) militants in recent days.
In a statement, the Kurdistan Regional Government Peshmerga Ministry has said that they are willing to help their brothers in Kobani. Thousands of Syrian Kurds have fled Kobani in recent days, after IS insurgents captured a number of Kurdish villages close to the city in Northern Syria.
“The brutal attacks against our Kurdish brothers in Kobani in Western Kurdistan [Syrian Kurdistan] are yet another danger facing our people. It’s our responsibility to support them and fight against terrorist groups,” said the Ministry of Peshmerga statement.
In recent months, Peshmerga forces have fought Islamic State in northern Iraq. However, despite the fact that they remain engaged in battles with IS in Iraqi Kurdistan, they are prepared to cross the Syrian border and confront the insurgents in Syrian Kurdistan.
After IS attacked and captured about 21 Kurdish villages close to Kobani, thousands of Kobani residents fled to the Syrian-Turkish border. The Turkish authorities agreed to open the border for the refugees on Friday night.
Earlier on Friday, the Kurdistan Region President Massuad Barzani, called on all Kurdish parties to put aside their differences and come together to help Kurds in Syrian Kurdistan fight the extremist group.
Barzani also asked the international community to immediately begin work on a plan to help those facing a further possible catastrophe in Syrian Kurdistan.
