Liberals just cannot stand the thought of a secure border where millions of illegal aliens and future Rat voters and terrorists cannot easily cross.
THe Kurds have gone to great lengths to guard the backs of Americans.
During the occupation of Iraq, not a single American was killed in the Kurdish areas - not one. They were guarded like gold by the Kurds.
The KDP (the Barzani dominated Party, centered in Irbil), has cultivated ties with the US and Israel since the 60’s. They have been adept at managing relationships with the Iranians and Turks as well.

Official US policy has long been that we we reserve the right to use chemical or nuclear weapons to retaliate against the use of chemical weapons against us.
Margaret Thatcher made a very clear threat to retaliate overwhelmingly to Saddam Hussein with WMDs, if he used his huge chemical weapons stockpiles against the Coalition formed to liberate Kuwait in the Gulf War. Iraq at that time was the top country on Earth for use of chemical weapons, through the whole of the 1980’s, against Iran and its own Kurdish citizens.
That credible threat has often been cited as the reason that the mountain of caskets that US war planners had pre-positioned in the area, were eventually sent back to the USA empty.
