Flights at both Chicago airports have been halted Friday morning, due to a fire at Federal Aviation Administration radar facility in Aurora. Emergency crews found a man with self-inflicted wounds while putting out the fire.
A ground stop was in place at OHare International and Midway International airports as a result of the fire. Flights headed into both airports were being diverted to other airports, while flights departing the airports were being delayed.
The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said fire investigators were at the scene, as part of the DuPage County Fire Investigation task force.
Aurora spokesman Dan Ferrelli said, at about 5:45 a.m., firefighters and police officers responded to reports of a fire in the basement of the FAA Chicago Air Route Traffic Control Center at 619 Indian Trail Road.
Ferrelli said a man was found in the basement, suffering from self-inflicted wounds, though he had not been shot. The man was taken to an Aurora hospital for treatment. ATF spokesman Tom Ahern said the man suffered burns and self-inflicted knife wounds.

Just from watching the news story and observing...I’m getting the feeling the security there is about as good as it is at power transfer stations or cell towers (which is little or non-existant)...great.
I’ve always been concerned about charter flights with larger planes into smaller airports during football season in a place like Iowa City. You have relatively large planes flying football teams into smaller college towns that have airports with little security. Pretty easy for a group to overtake one of those small town airports and fly a plane into a stadium.
Well that has to stink, stabbing yourself.
Please ping me to aviation and aerospace articles. Thank you.

Many of these types of facilities are not manned nor do they have much security past a chain link fence and a lock on the door. There are a number of navigational systems besides radar that are critical.
Before we weren’t a country with borders we never had these foreigner problems so we didn’t need to secure everything like a prison.
I am in the air right now, flying from Spokane to Guatemala via Minneapolis. Plane left the tarmac 5 minutes early. I am hoping this does not effect flights soputh into ATL ....

Hopefully all of the folks that are to be there are already there.
LOADS of the best folks fighting for our 2nd amendment rights are gathered in the Hyatt Regency at OHare Airport. Here’s a link for the weekend’s agenda -listing all of the speakers:

Any FReepers attending?
I emailed David Codrea and he said that they’re going to work harder to get some of the speeches online for others to hear. He said that they’ll be available at the SAF website after the conference ends.
Did he try to cut his own head off? Stab himself in the chest? Inquiring minds want to know!
Prayers.
Japan’s tight immigration policy against muslims is working splendidly. Australia’s transition might be a little bumpy for a few years, but in the long run, they will be far safer than Europe and the US.
BTW ... in America’s Most Wanted, it finally comes out that one of those creepy hudlums back in 2006 [if I remember correctly] has Islamic Terrorist ties. It took 8 years for that to come out.
Info coming out quickly. Possible terrorism. Note posts 4 and 29.
The TV talking heads are saying that anything in the upper midwest could be affected - hopefully you'll get out of MPLS, but no telling. Flight Aware map shows a huge area up there with nothing in the air.
However, one of the first things out of the spokesman’s mouth was something about how this is NOT terrorism. I almost came out of my chair. Why do they always say that?
Thanks FRiend!
The stock market does not see this as a problem. Fake as it is.
When I read this headline the first thought that popped into my head was Atlas Shrugged.
LOL!
This enroute employs around 500 controllers on a 24/7 basis, but mid shift may only have around 25.
Security is fair, razor wire high fence, armed guard at gate, coded locks on doors, picture id at all times.
Certainly would be considered a 'soft' target for an assault, but good enough to deter anyone who does not like getting shot at.
Getting out is just as hard as getting in. I worked there for 13 years before I could get a transfer out.
