They Lost Their Bakery, Now Face Bankruptcy
The Daily Signal ^ | September 29, 2014 | Kelsey Harkness

A bakery owner in Oregon broke down in tears while discussing the fallout of her and her husband’s decision not to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple on the basis of their Christian beliefs.

Earlier this year, the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries found “substantial evidence” that Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, discriminated against the lesbian couple.

Oregon bakery owners face a $150,000 discrimination fine for not baking a wedding cake for lesbians.

They now face a fine in excess of $150,000.

The ordeal started in February 2013, when Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman asked the bakery owners to design a wedding cake for their same-sex commitment ceremony.

At the time, Oregon defined marriage as the union between one man and one woman; voters overwhelmingly approved the constitutional amendment in 2004.

Aaron told The Daily Signal he thought he was “well within” his legal rights to decline the service, citing his traditional beliefs that a marriage is between a man and a woman.

In January 2014, the Kleins were charged with violating Oregon’s Equality Act of 2007, a law that protects the rights of the LGBT community.

Constitutional 1st Amendment right of free association (or not to associate) aside, it seems like this is a clear violation of the prohibition of Ex Post Facto laws.

Bee ess. This will not stand. You don’t need a reason, you can turn down work. the legislation is unconstitutional.

Liberals are eroding our freedoms little by little, while attacking our Christian faith.

What a shame. Because Christians are being persecuted in OR, we will no longer vacation there. We will fish elsewhere next summer.

Where can we send funds to support them?
Not only to pay their asinine fines and legal costs, but to pay a team to go after the queer state for discrimination and damages.

There is no Law in Obala’s America.

Law has been replaced with tuberculosis and EV-68
forced on children by Quartering by the EXEMPT Congress
and their Moslem half-black impostor without documentation.

I think at that point I'd forget about the 5th commandment since obviously this was an attempt to financially kill me. No, I would not turn the other cheek.

The first step is to ridicule those who aren’t going with the proper political group think. The next step is to assign onerous taxes & fines to those who won’t fall in line with proper thinking. This always leads to where the left always goes, the prison camp or hand dug trench hidden in the woods to purge the new society of the reactionary elements that prevent utopia.

No winners here. Clearly the government is way out of bounds. Clearly they should not be forced to accept anyone as customers by government.

Clearly this bakery was targeted for just this reason by the gaystapo.

And clearly the bakery should have just baked the cake. Its a cake, not vows. This was not a wise hill to die on. There are some, but not this one.

============================================================================ "Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with. ”― Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged, 1957

I wish this couple would stop crying about their situation to the news media and take some constructive action on their own behalf.

Move their business across the river (to WA) and refuse to pay the fine while they pursue legal remedies. They might find themselves with more support, success and happiness if they would just FIGHT for what they believe in.

Great question! I hope someone here on FR can find the answer to that, and post it. Those folks have my support.
