DALLAS (AP) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry says a handful of school-aged children who had contact with a man diagnosed with Ebola are being monitored.

Perry says health officials learned Wednesday that the children have been identified as having contact with the man and are being monitored at home. The unidentified man has been in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas since Sunday.

“Monitored” - what’s that? Call us if you’re not feeling well? A daily visit?

I would guess that you would take the child’s temperature every 4 hours for two weeks or so.

I wonder if an anti-viral like Tamiflu would help prevent the virus running its course.

From Daily Mail UK

Up to 12 people could be infected with Ebola including five children, it was revealed today, as health officials scramble to contain the deadly virus following the first diagnosis on U.S. soil.

The family of the male sufferer, who recently arrived in Texas from Liberia, could be at risk. EMTs who transported the patient were also deemed at risk but had received the all-clear today.

The man, who arrived in Dallas on September 20, is said to be critically ill and has been kept in isolation since Sunday. The patient, has not been identified but is believed to be married and have children. He is 'awake, talking and asking for food', doctors said today. However there are fears of the disease spreading because the man was in the U.S. for almost a week before being isolated.

Something to think about. What if child A picked up the virus but Child B did not. Now you lock them in one place together to isolate them from the public. Child A comes down with symptoms and then gives the virus to Child B. Then we have the children’s parents right there as well.

Now imagine this on an even larger group of people. Pretty scary really.

They don’t know where Liberia is. May as well have said he was from Mars.

The incredibly rapid spread of The Spanish Flu should have taught them something, and people move around now more than they did then.

You are right-—Obama doesn’t care and he’s a dangerous man.

The EMTs got the all clear? Like this patient who got the all clear prior to boarding a plane?

Would possible wide spread quarantine situation in the future create a crisis at the POLLS. If you’re not permitted to go to the polling place, you cannot vote. Hummm...

Yes, they’re playing fast and loose with “monitored” and “isolation.” Patient #2, the ambulance crew and the kids are in “isolation” at home and their twice daily temperature is being “monitored.” Take two asprin and call me in the morning. The Bethesda patient, whom we heard NOTHING about for four days was also “isolated” in his home and was “monitoring” his own temperature. He’s a doctor so knows the importance of precaution. Sure, try keeping 6 kids inside 24/7 and trust they take their temperatures dilegently.

Notice the CDC lied to us about the kids, too. It was first reported the kids weren’t in school leading many to assume they were too young to attend. Then we found out Dallas ISD was working with the CDC. Ok, so maybe they weren’t in school at the time of the 5:30 pm presser but what about earlier in the day or Monday or last week for CDC to be working with DISD. We don’t know where their house is but a quick search shows 6 schools about a mile from the hospital. Who knows how many schools are involved and did they go to the football game on Friday or kiss a boyfriend or tinkle on the school toilet seat?

Good luck with that. The malpractice insurance companies will just declare Force Majeure and be done with it.

Why is Patient #1 still unidentified?

Feds can’t control this virus via dialog with patient regarding his “contacts”. Let the public know, with pictures and summary of what is known about where he was while possibly infectious.

This release IS ALLOWED by HIPPA, since it contributes to public health objectives. Don’t accept another PR Event where the presenters say “CDC has it, we can’t talk about it due to HIPAA”.

“Reporters”: at the next PR event, challenge why exemption in HIPPA is not invoked where the relevant identifying information can be made public. Why continue the PC BS when pandemic is one possible outcome?

Not trying to invoke public panic, but the public can help supplement the effort. Remember who found the surviving Boston bomber after intense day-long Fed SWAT hunt... it was the dude out for a smoke that saw his boat cover askew...

His name is Thomas Eric Duncan. He’s a Liberian citizen.

I can guarantee that the people who registered this man into the Emergency Department did not know that Liberia was in Africa. Even if there was a screening question (which there may not have been...there will be now) asking if the patient had recently been to Africa, had he answered, “I just came from Liberia”, the screener wouldn’t have realized that was a ‘Yes’.

Whoever ultimately treated the patient would not necessarily have asked, mostly because of time constraints and the assumption that had there been a concern, it would have been noted by the screener. Also, to assume someone with an African-sounding name had recently been to Africa would be seen as ‘racist’.

In any event, if the patient was concerned about Ebola, and he was willing to share this information openly (which I have doubts about), had he simply mentioned the word, ‘Ebola’ 7 kinds of hell would have broken loose and he would have been rushed into isolation and wheels would have started turning immediately to identify contacts, notify CDC, etc, etc.

There will of course, now be much more specific questions asked of ALL patients at screening, and isolation protocols put into place which will tie up emergency departments across the country as the season of colds and flu approaches. None of these will have much effect because all of these patients have been spreading the virus as easily outside of the hospital as they would once they arrive. But there will be no quarantines or restriction of flights, because that wouldn’t be ‘fair’.

Bottom line... don’t depend on anyone but yourself to protect you from this. If the government will not prevent this from entering the country, and it has already proven that it will not, then things could get messy, and expecting hospitals to be able to contain this is naive. Where was this man before he went to the ER? How many days did he have a cough/cold. How many friends/family members were in close contact with him? How many other people from Liberia were on his flight?

Still, I don’t think panic is necessary (yet). Ebola is as far as we know only spread by close contact, so I am a little less worried about casual contact, even being in the next seat on a plane with an asymptomatic person or touching a doorknob after them shouldn’t be dangerous. What does concern me is the number of close contacts this man had, and theirs, and theirs. Not to mention the fact that I doubt he was the only person on that flight from Liberia, and I know that his was NOT the only flight into America from an affected African country.

Just my 2 cents,

O2
