Wisconsin couple a bit in awe to be invited by pope as synod auditors

By Denis Downey Catholic News Service

MENOMONIE, Wis. (CNS) -- Alice and Jeff Heinzen will not only be serving as auditors for the extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the family at the Vatican Oct. 5-19, they also will make a presentation before the general assembly.

In their main role as one of 14 married couples from around the world selected to serve as auditors for the synod, the Heinzens will observe general assembly sessions and participate in group discussions with the English-speaking delegates.

"During the general assemblies, we will be listening and observing," Alice Heinzen said in an interview in advance of the synod with The Catholic Times, newspaper of the Diocese of La Crosse.

It would seem that this will be a wonderful couple to have input at the Synod. They plan to pray and fast in preparation. ;-)

And the fact that they’re from the diocese of LaCrosse, where Cardinal Burke originated from, may not hurt, either.

A synod /ˈsɪnəd/ historically is a council of a church, usually convened to decide an issue of doctrine, administration or application. In modern usage, the word often refers to the governing body of a particular church, whether its members are meeting or not. It is also sometimes used to refer to a church that is governed by a synod.

The word "synod" comes from the Greek "σύνοδος" (synodos) meaning "assembly" or "meeting", and it is synonymous with the Latin word "concilium" meaning "council". Originally, synods were meetings of bishops, and the word is still used in that sense in Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. Sometimes the phrase "general synod" or "general council" refers to an ecumenical council.

We should commit to prayer for this Synod.

Prayer for the synod?

Yeah. That it be cancelled. Maybe there will be blizzards.

The main enemy of marriage and the natural family today is the State. The income tax, estate taxes, subsidies for illegitimacy, and government schooling are the chief mechanisms by which the modern State attacks the natural order.

If the Synod does not condemn all of these, it will be a waste of time and money.

If it were possible to get rid of income taxes, estate taxes, subsidies for illegitimacy, and government schooling, the legalization of “gay marriage” would be a laughable sideshow affecting practically no one.

The state and the misdirection that takes us down the path to securalism is a significant part of the problem. It is also the lack of moral leadership and the choice of citizens that allows us to follow the easy path of the world.

Church leaders need moral strength to do the right things and follow the path of Christ, It is hard to do, but we need to understand that we are a Church of saints and sinners and we try our best to follow Jesus to Heaven.
