The condition of the first Ebola case in the United States was downgraded to critical Saturday by Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.
The patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, had been listed in serious condition in recent days. He was diagnosed with the deadly virus Tuesday.

You have an Amerocentric view. Flights from the Euro nations can’t all be stopped. Flights from mexico or Canada can’t be stopped.
With regard to the other people, that is the risk one takes.
The world lacks the spine to close all flights from Africa
There is no vaccine (although one could be cooked up pretty fast, given the circumstances. By "fast", I mean 12-15 months).
What is out of stock is ZMapp, a monoclonal antibody product. You have to understand, two months ago ZMapp production was a guy with a pipette and an Erlenmeyer flask. There was enough to treat four or five patients, and it was gone.
It's far, far away from being a commercial product with corresponding production capacity. If it works at all (unknown), industrial-scale production (which has not been proven to be possible) could be 3-5 years away.

Undetermined[edit]
Patient awaiting physician and/or assessment.
Good[edit]
Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious and comfortable. Indicators are excellent.
Fair[edit]
Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious, but may be uncomfortable. Indicators are favorable.
Serious[edit]
Vital signs may be unstable and not within normal limits. Patient is seriously ill. Indicators are questionable.
Critical[edit]
Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable.
“Diseases....Burning kills it all. The most common way of insuring the “death of this contagious disease”. “
I think you are right for a virus like Ebola.
But, I learned something the other day from Salamander. A “prion” is a disease that is transmitted from animals to humans. Like rabies, chronic wasting disease (CWD), etc. It is a protein, and is very hard to kill. Even cooking venison that has CWD doesn’t kill it - and then the person gets it.
Dead animals are hard to get rid of. Burning the carcass leaves the protein behind - ready to infect the next animal, etc.
It takes a real high temperature to kill it (more than a normal fire). I think they said a pressurized vessel with high steam for an extended period kills it. Not sure if that was for disposal, cooking, or both!
Seems there was this brother that was watching his brother’s cat and it died.
He called his brother and when he answered, he said: “Your cat’s dead”
Yada,,Yada,,,Yada,,,
Looks like old Duncan is climbing the latter to get the ball off the roof.
Since it appears most African flights transit thru Brussels, wouldn’t the EU have authority to deny disembarkation thru the transit area?
How many people in the EU are being exposed via the transit terminals?
That is definitely the best solution. It won’t be done though. We are literally surrounded by idiots!
Word will get around, even over there, and said trip should seem exponentially less attractive.
No more than 3 people died in the US last year from rabies.
Thx...had an encounter with a bat 2 nites ago...don’t think it touched me...got into our cabin and was madly trying to get out...still freaked
I can’t figure out if this is sarcasm or if you’re serious.
Thanks for that article. I haven’t heard about CWD in years, and people around here do lots of hunting. Interesting how it is still in the debate on deer management.
On the radio yesterday they had a bee hive owner on. He was saying how the “bee die-off” is being used by all sorts of environmentalists to ban this or that. He said that as in most cases, the private people (bee hive owners, farmers, deer breeders, etc.) figure out solutions first. But after it has been in the news awhile the government jumps on.
He said that the bee deaths were worst in 2005(?) or so. They have been on the rebound now and are getting much healthier. Of course the news doesn’t report that.
critical sounds worse than serious. any rating scale i’ve ever used had critical worse than serious. it’s saying important is worse than urgent or immediate.
Like Rodney Dangerfield said when going in for a procedure, “if every goes ok I’ll be out in a week. If not, I’ll be out later today.”

Sad situation for the patient, his loved ones, and the health care provider community. Keep them in your prayers.
