Liberal journalists are now claiming that Americans who use the term #Obola are racist and xenophobic, continuing the trend whereby any criticism of President Obama is hastily characterized as a racial slur. In an article for the Verge entitled Ebola panic is getting pretty racist, feminist journalist Arielle Duhaime-Ross blames Dinesh D’Souza and Michael Savage for popularizing the hashtag #Obola as a “racist xenophobic….banner to rally around,” despite the fact that the meme patently represents a witty encapsulation of what many see as the federal government’s botched response to the Ebola outbreak and the failure to block flights from West...

  • Contagion Blast Radius: How Far Can Ebola Droplets Travel?

The study made a startling realization: there’s a crucial respiratory cloud that you expel every time you sneeze or cough, which is made up of hot/moist air and some water. This cloud actually enhanced the range and travel length of the smaller droplets, helping them travel way farther than they previously thought. Because the droplets are in a cloud, they stay suspended and travel further — particularly smaller ones, which travel up to 200 times farther than previously estimated. Therefore, they can penetrate the room and ventilation systems more insidiously.

Ebola viruses (EBOV) cause often fatal hemorrhagic fever in several species of simian primates including human. In 2009, Reston-EBOV was the first EBOV detected in swine with indicated transmission to humans. In-contact transmission of Zaire-EBOV (ZEBOV) between pigs was demonstrated experimentally. Here we show ZEBOV transmission from pigs to cynomolgus macaques without direct contact. . All macaques became infected. Infectious virus was detected in oro-nasal swabs of piglets, and in blood, swabs, and tissues of macaques. This is the first report of experimental interspecies virus transmission, with the macaques also used as a human surrogate. Our finding may influence prevention...

A major West African airline has stopped flying to Liberia and Sierra Leone amid growing concern about the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. Asky said it took the decision to keep "its passengers and staff safe during this unsettling time". The number of people killed by the virus in West Africa has now reached 672, according to new UN figures. In Sierra Leone, the doctor who led the fight against Ebola, Sheik Umar Khan, has died of the disease. Government officials hailed Dr Khan, 39, as a "national hero". The government disclosed last week that he was being treated...

An Ebola victim has flown in from Liberia and has now been placed in an isolation ward at a Dallas hospital. “This individual left Liberia on the 19th of September, arrived in the U.S. on the 20th of September [and] had no symptoms when departing Liberia or when entering this country,” said Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Officials said the man left the disease-stricken country of Liberia to visit with friends in the United States. They did not say if the man left Liberia for the United States because he had contacted the disease,...

It’s here. This time Ebola didn’t arrive in a specially-designed, hermetically-sealed aircraft, transferred to a space-age ambulance, tended by white space-suited attendants, and delivered to the most secure isolation wing at an Atlanta hospital.  This time it didn’t arrive with the press watching every move, and pundits questioning the wisdom of bringing Dr. Brantly back home. What could rightly be described as Patient Zero on U.S. soil arrived in Dallas, and is being held in isolation at Texas Presbyterian Hospital. CNBC confirms that the CDC has found the patient to test positive for the Ebola virus. This is the first...
