Looks kinda like a beard to me. Besides, the bible said he had a beard.

Maybe engraving a beard clogs up the image too much.
Artist’s choice.

Besides, the bible said he had a beard. So does the Shroud of Turin.
But it's a nice plate. Too bad it's broken.

Maybe the images are the recollections of someone who knew him before he grew a beard. Doesn't bother me one way or the other.
Though there is a certain element which haunts this forum who would denounce you as a heretic, cultist, etc. if you disagreed with them on the size, shape or even whether or not he had a beard. Had these people been living in John Calvin's time, they would have you burned at the stake or beheaded, so they have made some progress.
Or maybe they have just lost the power to do it . . .

My church has a picture of Noah standing outside his ark, and it doesn’t look a thing like him!

Only Catholics paint halo’s and I think that became a practice around 2 or 300 AD

Obviously the author thinks he’s suggesting something by saying he didn’t have a beard, since he put the questionable assertion in the headline; that’s what I’m responding to.

In art history class, many years ago, I saw a Roman encaustic painting that had a beardless Jesus. The professor assumed that he was painted the way a Roman who had never seen him would paint him. Spain was a Roman outpost, so it would not surprise me if the image was also Roman style.

More historical confusion ... Christian Era is supposed to have replace Anno Domini.
