Christians across the nation are mobilizing to defend a group of Houston pastors who were ordered by the city to turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality, gender identity issues or Houston mayor. Their message is simple Dont Mess with Texas Preachers.

Heaven forbid that happens. But if it does, I for one will gladly fly to Houston with a toothbrush in hand and join these brave men of God behind bars.
Behind bars? For refusing an illegal order? Not me. Ever.
Upheld by SCOTUS. Next?
I don’t like it any more than you do. There’s a difference between what should be and what is.
WTF are you talking about?
If by Yankee you mean hispanic, then yea. The City of Houston’s population is 2,201,027. 900,000 to 1,000,000 are of hispanic or latino origin. Otherwise, you are FOS.
I don’t think that is quite right.
The wording is “shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion. “ Meaning, Congress shall not ‘establish’ an official or state religion. That is all.
Tax free status is conferred by an effort to quiet the political speech in the pulpit by the carrot of ‘no taxes’.
No law means no law, not even a tax law. The power to tax is the power to control, the Founders knew this as well.
Read the amendment. Read what it says.
I did, and your parsing/twisting it like the liberals tried to do with the 2nd is not going to work. I have studied this issue. It means what it says; Government has to stay out of the control of religion and cannot prohibit its practice. Its pretty simple.
feel free to discuss the word “establishment” in regards to the history as it was at the time (i.e. the Church of England being the ‘established’ Church, all others being illegal)
Feel free to explain how taxing a religion does not allow the State to control and even eliminate it if they choose.
Planned parenthood has tax exempt status....do you think they don’t violate the same rule?? Different standard when it’s a liberal cause!!
Actually, FRiend, it is the desire not to tax the church, through the 501c part of the law that limits the free speech of the church.
Churches do not pay tax under 501c AND having accepted that, also accept that they may not be partisan politically.
IF, a really big IF, a church desires free speech, then pay the tax (render unto Cesar....), give up the 501c exemption, and carry on.
Churches have never paid taxes in America from before 501 (c) was created. It exists for Churches to avoid violating the 1st. Its a law and as such cannot apply to a religion - that’s why it exists.
Exactly. It's a law. "Congress shall make NO LAW respecting an establishment of religion..." Seems like it's rather hard for some folks, even (especially the atheist faction) here on FR.
Congress shall make NO LAW respecting an establishment of religion...They can pass any law they want, but at no time, under any circumstance, no matter what, will it apply to religion. Period. No law, means NO LAW.
that doesn’t mean that churches are exempt from the SAME laws that govern everybody as a group.
UNLESS the church agrees to be silent on certain things, then those churches can be exempt to the general tax on incomes.
The income tax is NOT church specific, at all. It does not call out churches. What DOES call out churches is the 501c exemption.
So, reject the exemption, unsilence your pulpit and pay Cesars tax.
If you take/keep the kings gold, you WILL wear his collar.
Get the 501c3 designation and bow to Ceasar? Nope. Congress shall make NO LAW. Period. None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Nothing.
This does NOT mean, shall not be infringed, as long as yo have a background check, and a permit, and ask permission, and pay a tax. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED is exactly what it says.
Sheila Jackson Lee supporters.
