Troy pound The troy pound is 5,760 grains (≈ 373.24 g, 12 oz t), while an avoirdupois pound is ≈21.53% heavier at 7,000 grains (≈ 453.59 g). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_weight#Units_of_measurement

There are 12 troy ounces per troy pound, (373.24 g) rather than the 16 ounces per pound (453.59 g) found in the more common avoirdupois system.

"Troy pounds and regular pounds are the same."

No, they aren't. The conversion factor from troy to avdp. is multiply by 0.82286. Source= Glover's pocket ref. 2nd Ed. Really, the only units that are the same are grains.

Wow! awesome... As a hobbyist prospector, I would love to find something like this, except, I am afraid if I did, I might just have a heart attack and die on the spot... To date, I have not even found a nugget weighing even a gram yet. Have done a little detecting, but the old gold mining areas here in Arizona are full of iron and lead trash that make it pretty trying on the patience.

Mining law covers finding gold on federal land... its fair game... as long as it is unclaimed public land... that is how you make a claim, after you locate gold... unless he was claim jumping and found it, a lot of public lands have mineral rights privately claimed. It is hard to find unclaimed gold bearing land here in Arizona (in known gold areas) However I do believe he will have to pay federal tax on the sale of it now days... It’s state land (at least here in Arizona) your not supposed to be prospecting on.

It was pushed up with molten rock many, many moons ago, but it certainly has traveled along ways since it broke away from it’s original source... being smooth like that! Had to be quite the flow to move that huge dense hunk.

I also would not bet against others being found near it... gold concentrates together and nuggets are often found in patches when metal detecting.

75 troy ounces is 6.25 troy pounds, try that using 16 and it still isn’t the 5.12 standard mentioned in the article.

It's not pure gold. . . and it's in a matrix. . .

You know... If I ever found anything like that I would KEEP MY MOUTH SHUT!!! Whomever found this and was dopey enough to declare it in such a public way is going to lose it. You think the government is going to let you keep that??? Even IF it’s on your own claim?

Melt it down in to little pieces and sell it off over the long run.
