I grew up the same way. No locked doors, leaving the car running for a quick trip into a convenience store, walking the country roads at night with my sisters. It’s a different world now.

In a part of town near where I live, when it's winter, folks pull up to the (small) grocery store and leave their engines running while they go in and do their shopping. Too dang cold to come back to a cold car.

May have something to do with being where all the cops and firemen (mostly military vets) and their families shop. Maybe there's a sporting goods store's worth of sidearms under all those winter jackets.
