I thought this had a ring of familiarity....this case goes back a number of years. While it was being spotlighted, the regime put it off to the side. They do these executions when people have lost interest and the outcry has died down and few are paying attention anymore.

Actually, in this case, this verdict may not have been too mistaken. It *was* premeditated, and she had even told a friend she intended to kill him.
The mitigating factor is that she could not have successfully accused him of rape in Iran, or she would have been punished for “adultery”. Thus, rape is effectively legal in Islamic countries. And this is the real injustice.
So her only alternative, even if she fights him in the act, is either mayhem or homicide. Since after rape, her value as a person is so diminished in her society that many women commit suicide, homicide is a reasonable option.
One reasonable alternative is for women to band together and hunt rapists. Having no connection to the rapist would make homicide much more difficult to prove, but would send a powerful message to men who might rape.
