N.Y. official: Ebola policy 'a real stunner'
CNN ^ | Oct 25, 2014 | Ray Sanchez and Elizabeth Cohen

A mandatory 21-day quarantine imposed by New York and New Jersey on health care workers returning from West Africa caught local and federal officials by surprise and spurred a heated debate on handling the spread of Ebola without cutting the flow of medical aid to the hardest-hit West African countries.

The policy of isolating medical personnel and others arriving from Ebola-affected countries zones was abruptly implemented Friday by the governors of New York and New Jersey, Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie. The announcement came one day after a New York doctor who treated patients in Guinea became the first Ebola case diagnosed in the city and the fourth in the United States.

The mandate came as a surprise to the federal Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention in Atlanta, according to a federal official familiar with the situation.

"They're not happy," the official said of the CDC. "These two governors said, 'Take this, federal government.' They're very worried we won't be able to get physicians or nurses to go (to countries affected by the Ebola outbreak)."

A New York City official called more stringent screening "a real stunner."

"They did this without consulting the city, and that's not a good thing," the official said of Cuomo and Christie. "They didn't let anyone know in advance."

I don’t understand how he’s cleared in 21 days but he carries the virus in his sperm for 60 days plus AND he can infect someone. How is that clear?

Take over a Holiday Inn in Nebraska, near the unit that treats Ebola victims.

Give each person coming back his own room (which gets him a private bathroom too.)

Deliver food, wait 21 days. Quarantine accomplished!

( of course, this is just for Americans coming back. No visas for nationals of the three counties affected )

The two int’l arrival airports in the metro area are run by the NY/NJ Port Authority. It’s a joint semi public agency overseen by the Governors of NY and NJ. My guess is Chrisite told Cuomo he was announcing this and if Cuomo disagreed he would block some very important PA projects NY was counting on. Also, even though Cuomo is an easy election winner he wants to keep Deb lasso in his place. He is working to see that the Working Family Party, a DeBlaso stalwart, loses its ballot place by starting a party to draw votes away from it. This kind of announcement tells Deb lasso who is boss in NY.

I was going to ask "Can we make it a Sheraton?" because my business travel experience with Sheratons has been spotty.

Then I remembered that my Sheraton issues often involved bad housekeeping, so ix-nay that unasked request.

The last thing we need is an Ebola Sheraton with bad housekeeping.

Ellis Island should be used for its original purpose.

“New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett is concerned that the mandatory quarantine will discourage doctors and nurses from volunteering to take care of Ebola patients in West Africa, according to her spokeswoman”

So people are willing to go to Africa to help people who have the Ebola virus, but are not willing to go through a 21 day quarantine to prevent the spread of the disease here?

What the heck is wrong with those people?

Arogance gets a lot of people killed.

In this case, the doctors think they are immune.

Expect that if you do that to Nebraska, the local Reserves and Guard will start driving people away with tanks (old ones, but they work).

I have family there, and with the careless disregards being shown by doctors, the locals are pretty worried about shipping the worlds Ebola to Omaha.

And what will the Federal CDC do about it? Nothing, except complain. Want to see a federal SWAT team mobilize? This is their chance.

There are SO many other infringements of States' Rights that this should set an example. What did the Feds do in the Bundy stand off? They stood down. States' Rights are our last best hope. The red state governors should tell the Fedgov to shove it in so many other liberty killing matters.

Oh right, some 31 States did not sign on to ObambiCommieCare which was a good start. State Governors have more power than even the Feds don't realize. Hell, even local Sheriffs have more power than DC in many cases.

States' Rights!

Just another sign of the breakdown of the Federal Government.

These lunatics would get us all killed for their PC incompetence.

We have 100% survival rate except for the black Liberian guy.

It's been more than 21 days after he entered the hospital and after he was living with his family members in USA.

I sometimes miss entire days of news because of other commitments. Have I missed the story of his family being pronounced disease free or otherwise? For good or ill there should have been news of their fate by now.

He was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed by September 28th. He had been living in an apartment with his family before that and after he had originally gone to the hospital with symptoms.

Some kindly person/org had provided trailer type places for the family to live in isolation away from the city. This is the 26th of October, well short of the alleged incubation period of 21 days. Surely their fate has been decided for good or ill.

Since the media trumpet every successful treatment or lack of disease being caught from someone exposed, I'm wondering what has become of the exposed family?

Have I just missed it?

Please see my post at #53. Duncan was symptomatic for 4 days while living in that apartment with his family. Has there been any news of the family’s fate that you know of? The incubation time of 21 days is well past (the 24th of September to the 27th of October).

No they wouldn’t. They need people to smoke in order to get tax revenue from cigarettes.

That’s the amazing thing. The governors are at least making decent decisions — probably because of election season. But the Fed seems not to care. They are so convinced of their talking points that they walk around in head to toe spacesuits with separate respirators for breathing, but they want the people to sit on the bus with contagious ebola carriers. So, they say one thing, do another, and want us to do what they say but not what they do.

The only thing that jumps out at Occam’s Razor is that they want someone infected. Does that even make sense???

I don’t really care how hard it is to get people to go help out in Africa. I care much more about keeping people in the US safe. If people want to go help Ebola patients in West Africa common sense dictates that they need to be strictly quarantined for however long it takes to ensure they are not contagious when they come back.

Don’t worry. Panty Waist Cuomo has just revised the “quarantine” Procedures for NY.

Now the person can quarantine “at home” for 21 days with full contact with family and friends. Health workers will check their condition “twice a day”.

Why bother.

They aren't completely out of the woods, even if they have shown no symptoms. The incubation period in a small percentage of cases is as long a s 42 days.

Then, too, see this post about asymptomatic infections, and that may be the case with the family.

If that was the case, they should show antibodies to Ebola, but there seems to be little information about their condition available.
