A Nasa rocket due to be visible across the East Coast on its way to the International Space Station has blown up on the launchpad.

The rocket exploded six seconds after lift-off from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island in Virginia.

Engineers said there were no problems reported before the launch, and say they have 'no early indications' of what went wrong.

'A mishap has occurred. we have lost the vehicle,' controllers said seconds after blast off.

I can find no evidence that “hundreds” of test pilots were killed trying to break the sound barrier.

Nor can I find evidence that we lost “hundreds” of rockets during the U.S. development program.

we lost hundreds of test pilots trying to break the sound barrier and hundreds of test rockets.
Maybe a dozen or two, but not hundreds.

there are no better modern alternatives

I'm sure Space-X would beg to differ.

Why is this story buried?

Buried? There was a huge thread yesterday as it happened live:

Yeah I saw that thread, but the news seems to be buried. Not by FR

Yeah I saw that thread, but the news seems to be buried. Not by FR

CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC all had breaking news for at least an hour after it happened, including talking head "experts" speculating over possible causes. I'm not sure it warrants more coverage than that. I wouldn't expect any mention of it today, for example.

Sounds like NASA is privatizing with the wrong guys.

Yeah...after an incident like this I would be looking for a company called "Sub-Orbital Sciences"...not "Orbital Sciences". The sucker never made it out of atmosphere.

In celebration of Islam, the rocket was wearing a suicide vest!

Agreed, but politics has to be a considered cause.

Muslims aren’t included in the space program for nothing. This was a private launch, but I’m sure there are NASA fingerprints all over the rocket.

I watched it live.
When the throttle of the engines were taken to 108%, something broke, the engines faultered, and a fire, not redirected engine exhaust flared around the base of the rocket, which flared more, as the rocket cmae straight back down to the pad, and upon impact, all the fuel exploded.

If you saw the live feed, next to one of the restraining mechanisms, which looked to be a swing away design, there were eight fluid lines on the outside of the rocket skin.

This is the third time this first stage was used. With the amount of vibration, shock, temperature changes in seconds of time, flowing pressure changes through those lines in hunfredths of seconds, and lastly, the actual weather changes on all of these thigs, as the rocket, ready to go, sits on the pad, for an extended launch cancellation time.

I speak from 20 years of aerospace manufacturing experience.

Sumbunny done did dah dawg, agin’!

This story is buried, because it is was NOT NASA, but Orbital Science Corporation, a private company. And because it was NOT NASA, it was NOT ‘Uncle Bammy’s gov’mint’.

What’s new?

The last thing I would want a big investment riding on would be anything Russian. They “may” have gotten rid of communism, but they still have the same work ethic problems.

Not everything is a political cause or should be politicized.

Agree. Until the administration politicizes things.

NASA administrator: Muslim outreach a top priority

But I must commend you for being so very open and liberal in your thinking.
