Covered California Website Outage Hides Huge Premium Increases

As someone who was forced into Covered California (CC) last year when Aetna, my long-time and excellent healthcare insurer, exited California’s individual market, I am painfully aware of the technical incompetence of the CC website.

This year, the CC website has been down for the last two weeks, even though CC renewals are due by November 15th. As someone who had their monthly healthcare premium jacked-up by 71% from $780 a month in 2013 with Aetna to $1,336 with Covered California in 2014, it seems convenient the website outage is hiding the huge premium increases many new Covered Californians are about to suffer.

For many years, I purchased preferred provider healthcare policies for my wife and me with Aetna. Despite running up over $100,000 in medical expenses after being rear-ended by a texting driver in 2012, my monthly premium only increased from $760 a month in 2012 to $780 in 2013, or just 2.6%. I became a very satisfied customer of Aetna.

The question California voters should be asking is whether the Covered California website is down due to technical incompetency or avoiding very bad news before an election.

I vote for the latter.

I can assure you...the guys who live under the bridge don’t pay $16,000....you are simply helping them pay for what they don’t want to pay.

People in the Marxist land of California have nothing to gripe about for they have foisted all of this misery upon themselves.

In the past they could have changed things but elected not to do anything and so look at California now.

It’s their liberal mecca and they made it. Now, they whine and gripe about the “mecca” of welfare, tax and spend, and crimes against the human rights, freedoms and liberties granted under the Constitution of the United States along with violation of the laws of our nation.

Boo-Hoo! Happy Halloween Californications, you pooped in your bed...now lay in it to sleep and don’t cry about it for it is too late to do anything about it now.

We have been paying for full healthcare coverage for our daughter. She is now out of state at graduate school and suffered an injury while working on an unpaid internship. Now we find that the "insurance" we have been paying for does not cover her unless she flies 2,000 miles to one of their centers, that all it otherwise covers is emergency care. We can't even get a diagnostic.

What happened to "portability"?

My wife’s open enrollment was delayed two weeks recently as well. Wonder if it is to help the Democrats also.

There is more support for FR from any other State, with the occasional exception of Texas. Are you saying that California FReepers deserve what has happened here and have no legitimate complaint? If so, I suggest you direct your post to the owner of this site because he lives in Fresno.

Oh look! A "texan" chucking stones...color me surprised...not.

"In the past they could have changed things but elected not to do anything..."

Of all the idiotic CA bashing comments I've read over the past 10+ years, yours has to be one of the most astoundingly ignorant ones I've seen...

Activist judges have overturned the will of the people on more than one occasion, precipitating the turn of CA into a blue state.

If you can't contain your disdain for CA and insist on posting derisive comments, at least do us all a favor and educate yourself first...

60% increase here in VA for an individual Anthem Blue Cross “silver” level plan. For me alone, the premium has gone up to $740/month from $480/month. DH is on Medicare.

Can’t afford that, so will have to step down to a “bronze” level plan.

I have called both our Rat Senators and complained. They have no answer except try to get a subsidy (I don’t qualify) and call Gov. McAuliffe and tell him you support Medicaid expansion in VA (no bearing on my problem).

For the second year in a row, I’ve been advised that the plan I had the previous year is no longer Obamacare compliant, so I have to waste time shopping around.

The death spiral is getting out of control.

“Activist judges have overturned the will of the people on more than one occasion, precipitating the turn of CA into a blue state”

And...what party did these Judges belong? What party put them into the positions they hold? What party is the majority in California?

Why? I don’t think it’s too hard to figure out that the MAJORITY of the people actually VOTED to turn California into the “Utopia” it is now.

Do I despise California......Absolutely, for it is the rotten fruit that has infected the rest of America and now we all pay for the results of the votes of the people of California in the loss of our own freedoms, liberties and moralities.

California will never change for it will continue to get worse. Look at how now illegals are blessed with open arms in California while the rest of America is doing everything it can to prevent them from coming in.

In California “Up is Down,” “Black is White,” “Night is day” and on and on and on.

You (as a conservative) are powerless to do anything to change California for you are far outnumbered by the liberals living there...and it will only become worse.

You can “huff and puff” but you are not going to blow down the brick house California built.

meh...your ignorance is showing again...FEDERAL judges.

Relish your tenuous “superiority”...for now.

Texas’ time is coming, not that I relish it or enjoy rubbing Texan noses in it...unlike some around here.

He's saying exactly that...his reply to me confirms it.

“Are you saying that California FReepers deserve what has happened...”

No, I did not say California FReepers deserve what has happened. I said “the people” of California. It’s a statement denoting the Majority of those living there have brought this upon themselves. FReepers are conservatives and actually take action upon themselves to inform and vote against the communist state of California.

I became one of the original members of this website in 1997. At that time California was already a lost cause. Free Republic was the only website established at that time to inform and discuss the moral destruction of our morality, freedoms and liberties that were occurring nationally at that time...mainly from California and infecting the rest of the country. California was already a lost cause.

Consider FReepers as “the resistance” in California but they are being totally vanquished by the majority that want welfare, communism, big labor, socialism, Marxism, and every other form of “free” goodies from the people who earn their own incomes but have a portion of it stolen from them by the government to give to the one’s who will not work to earn their own.

The sad fact is that with millions of illegals actually being invited to live in California (by the “people of California”) along with state and national representatives (such as Nancy Pelosi voted by the majority of “the people”) who ignore the Constitution and are elected over and over again to “bring home the bacon...and welfare checks along with laws that destroy morality and responsibility), the vote of conservatives is simply stifled and don’t count for anything any longer.

The war is lost there and cannot be won. We can only fight it in states that have a chance to remain free and actually represent the will of working and moral voters.

The old saying “Be careful in what you wish for” can be turned into another saying “Be careful in who you vote for.” In California they (the majority of “the people”) voted for and got what they wished for and have absolutely no regrets about it.

I realize they are federal judges. I also realize what party put them into their positions of power.

Sacramento hasn't noticed FR yet, but when they do I guarantee legislation that will require all political and news commentary websites to get approval for all comments by a Politics and Policy Review Board.
