[July 15, 2013 Redux] Trey Gowdy: House Can’t Just Defend the Status Quo on Immigration
National Review ^ | July 15, 2013 | Will Allen

Posted on 11/02/2014 12:54:32 AM PDT by ObamahatesPACoal

Representative Trey Gowdy defended efforts by the House GOP to pass an improved version of immigration reform. The South Carolina Republican, who has criticized the comprehensive immmigration bill passed by the Senate, argued that Republican opposition to immigration legislation amounts to a defense of the status quo that is neither responsible nor politically tenable for Republicans: “If I were in California in a swing district . . . I would at least want to say, ‘The party I represent has the following positions.’ And I don’t think that in every case, arguing that the current law is sufficient is the best position.”

(SNIP) “I will go on another plant tour this afternoon,” he told Laura Ingraham on her radio show. “I wish you would go on plant tours with me . . . and ask the question, ‘Do you have any openings?’ And 99 percent of the time, the answer is yes.”

(SNIP) You can’t pay an American to pick blueberries.”

No wonder Boehner wanted him on the Immigration subcommittee.

Time to shut the swinging door and stop the uncontrolled invasion.

Darn, this is depressing.
I’d heard Gowdy was an amnesty pimp, but I didn’t want to believe it.

I wonder if he has always been one, or has been bribed or blackmailed

One of the most important guarantees of the Constitution is that the United States will protect the individual states from invasion. This is not optional.

Damned right Congressman. The status quo is not acceptable. But obviously not in the way you mean, unfortunately.

Enforce the law!

Too bad. He appeared to be a patriot. Guess not. Just another open-borders sellout looking to merge our homeland with the third world.

Guess the "honest country lawyer" act is just that. An act.

And Gowdy is seen as some sort of a conservative hero. It’s disgusting. There is blueberry harvesting machinery and certainly plenty of Americans would take jobs driving it about blueberry fields.

Our politicians are not only corrupt, but stupid and arrogant too.

Immigration Reform:

1) Close the borders;

2) Deport all illegals;

3) Deport all misunderstanders of Islam.

Gowdy has been openly pro-amnesty for a while.

I always wondered why everyone was always treygowdy, treygowdy...blah, blah, blah.

A pity your excellent immigration reform plan cannot be carried out BEFORE Election Day. If, and IMNVHO, that's a big if, we really take the Senate, let's get in their faces about this.

“If I were in California in a swing district . . .”

Went through this in CA with B-1 Bob Dornan, who just would not listen on this issue, until a Mexican took HIS job. Then, no one would listen to him.

Of course, there is no chance that the GOPe will learn from recent history. The GOP apparently looks forward to living in a one-party Latin American country.

The arithmetic is quite simple. If all Latino immigration were to stop tonight at midnight ... legal and illegal .... we would still become a majority Latino country, i.e., America's northern-most Latin American Country. It would just take a while longer. That's because we are already talking about 1/3 of our total population.... in those states that comprise what will become Nuevo Aztlán, it already hovers around 1/2.

Fence. Enforcement. Deportation. Survival of the Republic.

Rand Paul's immigration speech
...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.

Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.

Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.

Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.

If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...

This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.

Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.

Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reform
Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but "Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration." ...he would create a bipartisan panel to determine how many visas should be granted for workers already in the United States and those who might follow... [and the buried lead] "Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers...

There are no “misunderstanders” of islam, but there are two models of Muslim: silent and jihadist. They’re BOTH evil.

I was wondering why Gowdy didn’t oppose Goober for the senate in SC. Now its starting to become a bit more clear.

Immigration reform is critical to our future, but the term immigration reform has become so emotionally charged that many conservatives reject any talk out of hand.

America absolutely must have immigration reform of of one sort or another because the system is so badly broken that that it has to be repaired.

Immigration reform does not have to be amnesty.

Any reform should include making sure that illegal immigrants do not receive the generous welfare benefits that many are now receiving and which LEGAL immigrants are not eligible for.

I have news for Freepers who are ignorant of who Trey Gowdy is. He is one of the finest people you will ever have defending your constitutional rights and our way of life that Obama is trying to destroy. He goes to bat agains’t the US government and its evil actions every day for individuals like Mr. GG2 who he has helped and is currently helping. I thank God for the guy everyday. His level of integrity is one of the highest in Congress and I am telling you this from personal knowledge.

I don’t know what Trey Gowdy’s stance on immigration is but I would be shocked to hear that he wants to let 11-20 million illegals put on a path to citizenship. Its likely he is interested in reforming the guest worker programs which do need to be addressed.

Corrupt, stupid and arrogant have no place in sentence referring to Trey Gowdy who is a true American Patriot.

I pray to God he gets appointed to Attorney General in Jan 2017.

You are correct.

We need to keep in mind that the very nature of conservatism is the REFORM of the tried and true for the preservation of our heritage as change is necessary for the health of an active state. Reform is the answer to calls for revolution or revolutionary change.

We need to go read some Edmund Burke.

The reactionary is the thinker that wants to live in the past and go back to the past even with the challenges of today. Conservatives are not reactionary.

Yearning for times past is just that, yearnings and memories. They can be indulged in but they cannot become the vision for tomorrow. Slow and careful reform of what we have inherited is the vision for tomorrow that allows the constancy the fosters Order.
