A senior citizen and a couple of clergymen in Florida face up to two months in jail for feeding the homeless.
A group of volunteers with the non-profit charity Love Thy Neighbor in Broward County face up to a $500 fine and 60 days in jail because they were feeding the homeless last Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, the New Times reports.
World War II veteran Arnold Abbott, founder of the interfaith organization, and members of a local church were confronted by Fort Lauderdale police officers because they had reportedly been in violation of the new laws against food sharing laws that were ironically enacted on Halloween, a night reserved for, well, sharing candy.
Trays of hot food intended to be distributed to the lines of homeless people on the street last weekend were instead thrown directly into the trash by the officers, who ordered Abbott to drop that plate right now. In total, four police cruisers and a half dozen uniformed cops arrived to the scene.
Abbott and two clergymen were subsequently issued citations and are due to appear in court in the coming weeks.
The new law comes on the heels of an announcement from the city in January that restrict camping, panhandling, food sharing and other life sustaining activities.
Not to be deterred, Abbott, who has been feeding the homeless for years, talked in the report about how his recent run-in with the law will change things.

Disgusting.
There’s a law against almost anything except perversion and street drugs, and what laws still exist against those two things, the left is trying to do away with. If you’re breathing, some azzhole will find a law you’ve broken. unless you’re really a criminal, in the traditional sense of the word-then you have all kinds of “rights”.
So are homeless people now "Bears", even the ones that are not "The Ghey" and "The Hairy"?
"If you don't get in OUR business we won't give you "The Business" if ya knows whats I means!"
[ And the cops were just doing there jobs... enforcing the law... no matter how stupid the law is.
I would like to believe that the cops should be able to question laws such as this one. Stupid laws are stupid and if cops go through with any old law that ends up being unconstitutional they should be prosecuted.
Just following orders is not a good defense. ]
If you don’t like a law, enforce it with zeal!
Some wise man once said this...
Several things happened that put many persons who were mentally incapable of caring for themselves out on the streets. Federal laws pushed by do gooders with no common sense forced institutions who were caring for persons who were safe, secure, and somewhat content, out on the streets. They were persons whom if they had their medications were as gentle and harmless as a lamb. If left on their own medications weren't taken and they became behavioral problems walking the street. IOW many do not understand what they do. This began in the 1970's. That is likely the majority of homeless.
Economic times can play into it also but is a temporary condition. Today if a person has the means they can migrate to another section of the nation where jobs exist.
The decline in the state of the family is another issue. The Great Society which told men that government would raise your kids and told women government would pay you checks for each kid did it's damage. Kids were born into poverty with no moral guidance. Public Housing became the family homestead. Kids were raised with no father figure and men coming in and out of the home. Kids were on their own and turned to Gangs as family. But generally even Gangs have places they live.
Last and I am not applying this to the ones arrested. Homelessness management has become big business operating as NPO's with huge wages for Board of Directors, management, etc. One such organization operates over a half a dozen Thrift Stores in a city near me and even with the items all being donated seems to always need more money. The organization had humble beginnings but is not almost a corporation sad to say.
This seems to be a small ministry in the article and as such should be protected under the Constitution as a mission of the church. For those taking food who can help themselves but won't? God will judge.
Great post.
“The dems dont like people of faith interfering with a potential voter base.”
How do you know these guys are not Dems?
I’m with you. No matter what nasty replies you may receive, no one would want that in front of their business. I’ve driven through areas of Orlando with a high homeless population. It ain’t pretty to see grown men dropping trou in public to urinate on a tree.
No I will not “get over it”. There are plenty of places to feed these people and plenty of places they can go. You have no right to impact my property to make yourself feel good. Take your dirty smelly lice ridden project somewhere else or I’ll help you.
Everyday as a business owner who does create jobs by working and not being g drunk or high.
Some can if they’ve shown they can do it without making people sick.
There’s a core reason for the left to oppose private charity.
Private charity inherently has limited resources,
and therefore must make sure that their resources are used on the truly needy,
which leads to discrimination and judgement.
They COULD spend resources willy nilly like the gov’t,
but they would soon run out, and their donors would stop
supplying them because of the waste.
THEY HAVE TO “JUDGE” THE RECIPIENTS, and judge them on some criteria that the left would inherently oppose.
Therefore, leftists prefer gov’t charity because they can procure the resources through the legal use or threat of force, and can “give” without “judging” the recipients.
I assume perhaps they passed this law because someone was giving away food, someone got sick or died because of it, and sued the hell out of the city as a result? Anyone know?
“Don’t feed the bears” was what came to my mind as well
food sharing —
Twin babies, one Mom!
And here I thought Communism preached "to each according to his needs."
It’s a safe bet the cops wouldn’t have bothered them had they been imams.
This guy Abbott is a long time lefty Democrat.
He’s happy the US has been socialist since 1932 and thinks Conservatives are stupid for saying they don’t want the US to go socialist when it already is.
He hates Christian fundamentalists and hates anyone trying to say this is a Christian nation.
Even today he says his ultimate goal is to teach working people to vote for Democrats and not against their own interests, i.e. Republican.

Who do we blame? The cop for enforcing stupid laws or the politicians for writing those stupid laws?
