The Polish Armed Forces plan to acquire cruise missiles for the new type of submarines. The missiles are to be capable of striking ground targets at distances up to 800 km, and are treated as an indispensable element of the Polish Armed Forces strategic deterrence system. According to MoD secretary of state Czesław Mroczek, the process for the acquisition of these new submarines is to start later this year, with contractor selection to follow in 2015.

Minister Mroczek stressed that, while it is certain that the Polish Armed Forces will acquire cruise missiles for the submarines, some issues nevertheless remain to be resolved in the procurement process. The proceedings aiming at acquisition of the new submarines is to start this year,

According to the Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army, General Mieczysław Gocuł, analysis conducted to date concluded that there is a requirement to arm the submarines with new-generation cruise missiles. These missiles will be treated as an element of the Polish strategic deterrence system. The new armament is to be able to strike targets as far as 800 km away.

“All of that comes together in the new type of submarine. There is no doubt that a submarine will be capable of striking the enemy with missile systems using cruise missiles, with a range of ca. 800 km,” Gocuł said.

He also pointed out that acquisition of the submarine-launched cruise missiles is one element of a process that will create, within the Armed Forces, new capabilities to detect, identify, reconnoiter and strike their targets, and to assess the potential effects of a strike before it is carried out. The Chief of the General Staff stressed the fact that the satellite imagery of the Polish military, the capabilities of the Special Forces and reconnaissance regiments, and of specialist reconnaissance and strike reconnaissance systems will be indispensable components that come together in order to create an effective new defense capability.

Submarine-based cruise missiles are an indispensable element of acquiring a strategic but conventional deterrence capability, General Gocuł said.

The acquisition of submarines armed with cruise missiles is part of a broader effort to strengthen Poland’s strategic deterrence, which also comprises the procurement of AGM-158 JASSM missiles, ground based Homar missile launchers and unmanned aerial systems. Cruise missiles are indispensable for the Polish military, Gocul concluded.
