Obamacare Architect: Lack of Transparency Was Key ..‘Stupidity Of Voter’ Would Have Killed Obamacare
The Daily Caller ^ | November 9, 2014 | Patrick Howley

Posted on 11/10/2014 1:55:28 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber said that lack of transparency was a major part of getting Obamacare passed because “the stupidity of the American voter” would have killed the law if more people knew what was in it.

Gruber, the MIT professor who served as a technical consultant to the Obama administration during Obamacare’s design, also made clear during a panel quietly captured on video that the individual mandate, which was only upheld by the Supreme Court because it was a tax, was not actually a tax.

“This bill was written in a tortured way to make sure CBO did not score the mandate as taxes. If CBO scored the mandate as taxes, the bill dies. Okay, so it’s written to do that. In terms of risk rated subsidies, if you had a law which said that healthy people are going to pay in – you made explicit healthy people pay in and sick people get money, it would not have passed… Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really really critical for the thing to pass… Look, I wish Mark was right that we could make it all transparent, but I’d rather have this law than not.”

Tom Daschle long ago said the only way to pass a healthcare bill would be to ram it through before anyone had a chance to read it and see what was actually in it.

In a sane country, this man would be tarred and feathered and possibly hanging from a lamppost today for what he did to us.

“That is both the ethical core and psychological heart of what it means to be a part of the left. That is where the gratification comes from. To see yourself as a social redeemer. To feel anointed. In other words: To be progressive is itself the most satisfying narcissism.”

This is an extremely accurate and important point that needs to be remembered. It's admirable to be dedicated to service, social well-being, and social justice. It's self-serving, deceitful, and destructive to operate on the principle that it's okay for you to purposely mislead those you are supposed to represent, especially when you do so because you think you are anointed to make change, and that you know better than they do what is best for them.

Further, it just isn't representative government.

THank you for posting this article. THe DC site (and all its iterations) is really annoying with all its pop-ups and unseen scripts that try to prevent you from copying and pasting. Grrrrrrr.

I will always remember two things, all the locked doors during its construction (only Democrats) and Olympia Snow (R, ME) being the deciding vote to bring it out of committee(and she got re-elected) anybody with half a brain could tell it was a farce in progress. But these same people elected Obama twice.
This is what a Bill Ayres education system gets you...dumb voters who have no idea what their government is doing to them. Teach them about condoms, but skip the civics class.

This could not have happened without the MSM lying and without the help of the Rinos that wanted their version of such a disaster. And still a good many of our Republican Senators are not sure they want to repeal this monster. There’s lots of blame that can be spread around.

Cross link to earlier FR thread too ... GRUBER: "Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage." (EXPLOSIVE Video!!!). Jonathan “speak-o” Gruber is the gift that keeps on giving.

I hope the plaintiffs in King, Halbig, etc. haul Gruber up to the SCOTUS, play videos of his comments, and ask him to explain them. I doubt he’d get away with calling them “speak-o’s” before the court.

The Republican leadership aided the passage of OC by not requiring the bill to be read in to the record in both houses when it was submitted, it only takes one vote to require it to happen, republicans were ordered by their leadership to not offer a oppose not reading the bill.

This is dynamite information, considering the upcoming King v. Burwell case on subsidies to states.

However, it’s a speech, not under oath. I doubt the SJC will listen to it, or allow Gruber to be brought in as a witness. It will be all lawyer-on-lawyer, with reviews of the law and the Congressional Record. In other words, lawyers and paper, even though Gruber is preaching the truth for all to hear.

Keep Obamacare until tax time - Every 27 year old and above will have to file their healthcare info and those without it will WINCE at the penalty/tax/fine/whateveryoucallit.

I feel your pain. Oh heck. that's not true.

You didn't get caught in your lie so it worked. Now, it's going to get swept into the dustbin of history, just like party's electoral hopes for the next few decades.

American blacks are leaving your sinking boat. Any Hispanics you help smuggle in across the border will typically become conservative after a few years.

Soon there will be nothing left but ancient negro racial demagogues and lonely, childless feminist spinsters. Oh yeah, and old radical professors.

Then you will die. And then, you will be quickly forgotten.
