But if this site is forced out of business because the government got involved then that is no better. We don’t need the stinking government controlling the net.

Government policing content is a completely separate issue, and people need to be vigilant.

But think about the broadcast networks. We the People own the airwaves, and ABC, NBC, CBS, etc., get to use them rent-free. But they don’t own them. In exchange for making gobs of money selling ads, they agree to our rules: They can’t charge for broadcast (antenna) signal. No profanity. They must air a news broadcast.

There are other rules, but those are the big ones. In 70 years of broadcast TV with the FCC regulating the airwaves — as they should, because the People of the US own them — no government entity has censored speech.

I don’t care how much money Big Internet spends on infrastructure — they don’t own the highway. They are renters, just like CBS. They want everyone to think that if the government — the People — enforces its ownership over the band and prevents abuse like Comcast deciding it wants a cut of Netflix profits, and they’re going to throttle your speed till Netflix pays up — it follows automatically that we’re also going to get a commissar yanking Free Republic off the web.

The history of United States radio and TV broadcasting says those fears are unfounded.
