Incoming GOP Senate chairman Ron Johnson plans border security bill

WASHINGTON — Even as President Barack Obama prepares to take executive action on immigration, an incoming GOP Senate chairman said Monday he is working on a border security bill and will aim to move it once the new Republican-controlled Congress convenes in January.

Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who is in line to chair the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said his legislation would include a guest worker program to reduce incentives for illegal immigration. It would build on work already done by Congress, including a House bill aimed at ensuring that 90 percent of would-be border crossers are stopped.

Johnson outlined his plans in an interview with The Associated Press amid growing GOP complaints over Obama’s plans to act on his own by year’s end to address the faulty immigration system. Obama’s plans, which could remove the threat of deportation for millions, are emerging as a major point of conflict with congressional Republicans who made big gains in last week’s midterm elections.

“Regardless of what President Obama does I’m going to move forward with a very strong border security bill,” Johnson said. “I hope President Obama doesn’t take that executive action because I think for many people that will poison the well and certainly make it more difficult to solve the immigration problem.”

“including a House bill aimed at ensuring that 90 percent of would-be border crossers are stopped.”

That’d be a fairly good start.

Use mexicos immigration law and just change the name. Wonder how the liberals would call it racist?

GOP has all the leverage here. Can’t see why Obama thinks he holds a winning hand. GOP has several ways they can really punish Obama with this and they will have plenty of cover for reversing it and punishing him repeatedly for the next 2 years.

This bill needs to include something about the visa over-stayers who fly in and don’t fly out again. Mexico ain’t the only problem.

Well, this is better than we now have.

BUT, it illustrates what happens when a nation's lawmakers are mostly small-town lawyers who turn to politics as part of their personal estate planning.

Nice work, Johnson, but WTF is wrong with a simple, one-page bill to fence the border? What is wrong with the appropriate committee that has the oversight of the BP within its purview to make sure existing laws are enforced? Immigration? 1/3 of the population is already Latino. My great-grandfather immigrated to the US, not Bolivia. Seal the border and let's fight that out later.

Every damned 2,500-page bill that comes up has too much in it, including an appropriation to repaint the park benches in some city in McConnell's district and to fund the study of the effect of long term unions between gay gerbils. (U of Nevada, Dr. Reid.)

Come on "Republicans," (Whatever TF that means, nowadays) let's get something done right.

Yes. All VISA over stays. Work, college, tourist, etc.

That is a huge problem.

Short of details. A real fence? Another phony virtual fence? Or just rely on more border patrol?

They should sponsor a bill to comply with and complete the provisions of the Secure Fence Act of 2006. And general talk of guest worker programs is always a bad sign.

Didn’t 0bama just sign something that EXTENDED visa stays? Thought I caught that on the news this morning. Probably another ‘pen and phone’ moment from that POS.

Secondly - while Ron Johnson IS from my state, I wish he’d just go for ENFORCING THE LAWS WE ALREADY HAVE ON THE BOOKS.

It’d be much quicker than all this folderol with a new bill, etc.

Diana in Wisconsin has it right on this one. We don’t need immigration reform. We need immigration enforcement. Plenty of laws on the books already. Just no interest at the gubmint level to enforce them.

Stop the sham! Enforce existing laws, then we can talk about what else is needed.

Johnson, you HOPE? Take two testosterone tablets and call us in the morning. Before you start HOPING (you namby bampy wimp) try kicking some ass. The GOP is deliberately ignoring a key fact.

Listen up RINOs, you weren't sent to DC to make nice with The Mombasa MF, but to stop him cold. Start by refusing to process Holder's alter ego.

This is the one area I would offer an amnesty of sorts. Tell them they have 10 days to show up at nearest Immigration office and re-apply, or be subject to a $50 per day fine. At least we could say we do have amnesty in the bill.

Is that 90% if what we catch, or 90% of what enters the country?

The President WILL GET an “immigration bill” after all, it just won’t be Amnesty. Sorry, elections suck for Democrats.

What the Hell is Johnson doing?

There's already a border-security bill - The Secure Fence Act of 2006. It has neither been funded or enforced.

(1) SECURE THE BORDER FIRST.
(2) Crack down on interior enforcement like Eisenhower did.
(3) Declare all sanctuary cities illegal.
(4) No guest worker proposals - let prisoners and welfare recipients do agriculture work, for God's sakes.
(5) End anchor baby status

Not really, if they just flood us with “guest workers” (that is, otherwise make them legal) instead.

It does not matter what Congress passes. Hussein will either veto it or sign it for show and then ignore it.

How would this be measured? Ten percent of as many as we see is still a huge number.
