Louisiana Democratic Sen. Mary L. Landrieu has already made it quite clear that she isnt going to go quietly in her bid to win a fourth term in next months Dec. 6 runoff.
Her effort to brand Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy as nearly incoherent ranks up there with Kentucky Democrat Dan Mongiardos effort to label Republican Sen. Jim Bunning as not entirely in control of his senses during that states 2004 Senate race. (Bunning, who started the race as an overwhelming favorite, was re-elected by only 22,000 votes, a margin of fewer than 2 points.)
This is the ultimate example of trying to localize a race, of trying to get voters to focus on the two candidates and forget everything else.
Landrieu doesnt explain the source of her opponents alleged incoherence. But to her campaign, it doesnt matter whether voters think that Cassidy might have an alcohol or pharmacological problem, or whether they think that he is merely not quite right.
All that matters is that they decide to cast their ballot by comparing the runoff candidates, rather than wanting to make a larger statement about President Barack Obama, as many voters in red states did earlier this month.
Given the extent to which she will go to hang onto her Senate seat, I wouldnt underestimate Landrieu. She is, after all, a skilled veteran campaigner who finished well under 50 percent in November of 2002 but came back to defeat Republican Suzanne Haik Terrell in the states Dec. 7 runoff.
But that was a dozen years ago, and the context of this years runoff is nothing like what it was in 2002. Landrieu probably still needs Cassidy to make a big mistake to win something not unheard of from Republican Senate candidates in recent cycles.

Why doesn’t she ask a question about where Bill was during Katrina? I think that move will help her persuade undecided voters,...............
That was classic!! She is the one making embarrassing gaffes. But I must ask since it is somewhat implied...does Mr. Cassidy have an issue with alcohol or pharmaceuticals?? Anyone on the ground in LA heard this?
“Landrieu doesnt explain the source of her opponents alleged incoherence. But to her campaign, it doesnt matter whether voters think that Cassidy might have an alcohol or pharmacological problem, or whether they think that he is merely not quite right.”
If I were in La. I would vote for Cassidy if he were in a straight jacket, I would have probably voted Maness in the primary.
Mary Landfill
Her "well under 50%" was 46% versus 42% this time, and Terrell had 27% with a total of 51% GOP votes against Landrieu, while Cassidy had 41% straight up with a total 56% GOP votes against Landrieu.
I would say that she is in trouble.
Bill Cassidy is a medical doctor and has served several terms in Congress. If there were any real issues they probably would have been publicized before this. Landrieu is desperate and hopes to sway the low information voters.
I'm not in Louisiana so I don't have on-the-ground information.
Crush her, Cassidy.
But she does have a remarkable resemblance to Miss Piggy.
Drink her wine, talk till two ... and make certain she doesn’t work/wake in the morning.
A politician calling a medical doctor incoherent.
IMO, she’s just channeling her inner Lyndon Johnson.
Complete horsesh!t.
This election will come down to who can get the electorate to the polls on Dec. 6.
There is only one statewide race and this is it. There are two congressional district
runoffs and some court judge runoffs and a couple of small towns with some local officals.
I suspect you’ll see strong efforts in the larger metro areas where the investment can
reach more voters.
Sorta begs for a Kermit-themed "Hey, even I'm voting for Cassidy!" Internet meme attack, huh?
Maybe Mary Landreau and Monica Lewinsky can start a fashion firm specializing in pants suits for fat women. Their first marketing efforts can be to most of the women currently serving or recently serving in the US Senate.
The DNC has already written her off!
Mega dittos!
Maybe. My big fear is we'll get complacent.
