Most unborn children diagnosed in the womb with Down syndrome are aborted and never given a chance to live their lives.
Part of the problem is a culture that wrongly believes people with Down syndrome are less valuable than others. An incident at a store where a mother of a two-year-old with the genetic condition had to deal with a cashier prejudiced against children with Down syndrome reinforced that problematic pro-abortion stereotype.
A blogger named Sherry wrote on her blog about an incident with her two-year-old son Gabe (right), who has Down syndrome. Sherry wrote on her blog Hand Me Downs that she was tempted to punch the employee but she delivered a more appropriate response:
Sometimes I forget that our son has Down syndrome. Its easy to be distracted by his two year old tantrums, his mischievous smile and go getter attitude. Gabe is kind hearted but stubborn.
Sometimes I forget, and that makes it even harder when someone reminds me in a not so kind way .
Like the cashier that gave me sad eyes and spit poison in a whisper,
I bet you wish you had known before he came out. You know they have a test for that now
Shock, horror, hurt and fury coursed through my body. I considered jerking her over the register and beating her senseless. I looked her up and down, I could take her .
Instead I used whit: I smiled a crazy lady smile I know right?! Its so much harder to get rid of them once they come out. Believe ME Ive tried Jackpot! Her mouth dropped open and she stared at me in shock. I leaned over the register and whispered to her,
What youre saying is that its okay for me to kill him while hes inside, but not outside? In my book there isnt a difference. For the record, we knew EVERYTHING about him during my pregnancy. He is our son now and he was our son then. There is no way in hell that I would let any harm come to either of my children. Including during the time that theyre so ridiculously considered disposable."
I had forgotten, that sometimes other people dont immediately see Gabe, they see a downs kid. They see poor parents and a burdened sister. I sometimes forget until I glance up and see the pity in their eye, or hear the ignorant comments in not so hushed whispers.
No way, it’s obviously to the cashier. Somebody here is TOO SENSITIVE.
It's not "the news", folks. It's from a mommy blog, written by an everyday person about her personal experience.
One of the rudest clichés beaten to death on FR. Take your own advice.
Excellent response to the ignorant cashier.
I was responding to what I considered a knee jerk reaction to what another Poster said. I didn’t attack the original Poster, I responded to someone who did.
As I also Posted, if I was mistaken, I will issue an Apology. I am waiting to see if the Poster I was defending will clarify his original comment.
Thin skinned FReepers, geez...
Well, that makes two of us. LOL
I just doubted the story- I had NO opinion on the topic.
You are the one that is ignorant.
If you have no opinion on the story, why bother posting...
You’re probably FAT. (now that’s an ignorant comment).
Thank you,
It’s exactly what I was trying to say. If I offended anyone, none was intended except perhaps for the cashier. Mears who jumped all over me, got my dander up and I responded rudely to her. Sorry Mears.
The mother has some great pics of baby Gabe at her blog, too.
Oh my! Just when I hoped the collective I.Q. decline on FR had maybe halted, or at least slowed, I get to this pathetic thread.
Thanks for trying to help get it straight. Truthers are always hard to deal with.
The ethic around here is “no personal attacks”. So when freepers use the shop-worn expression containing the word “yourself”, it makes it personal.
Just sayin.
Which of the two comments were you referring to?
The first "You must speak the same language as the ignorant."?
Or the second "Hes not half as retarded as you are"?
I’ve lived in NY, then moved to GA.
Down kids were rare in NY.
Down kids are common in GA.
Consider why.
Because they love abortion in new york?
Even if I met Stanley Ann Dunham (and she is mercifully dead, so she can no longer be embarrassed at her child’s pure evil), I would not have been this rude. I would assume that Stanley either (1) would know just how badly she messed up and not need the reminder, or (2) would be incapable of understanding that she gave birth to a less capable version of the Antichrist. I can’t imagine the level of rudeness required to do this to an ordinary mother whose child merely has limitations.
both
Very well said.
Remember when people had a “maybe you shouldn’t say that out loud” filter in their brain?
Sadly, it has gone away along with shame, common sense and respect for others.
Well, the OP was attacked in a personal matter by the Poster I addressed.
That being said, and this is coming from someone called a Romneybot and other assorted gems by other Posters, I will Post an apology to the person.
Moving on...
Both those comments were directed towards the Cashier in the story, not the Poster.
