Scientist apologizes for his sexist shirt, but the Internet still wants women to shut up and die

Matt Taylor, who's a great scientist and seems to also be a pretty cool dude, gave a teary, heartfelt apology for his choice of attire on the day of Rosetta's probe landing.

"I made a big mistake, and I offended many people," Taylor said at Friday's media briefing, his voice trembling, "and I'm very sorry about this."

With that, the briefing moved onto the science (as it should -- Philae's days are numbered, and we want to find out as much as we can from the little probe that could). Taylor seemed to have trouble speaking for a few minutes, but perked up by the end. Many praised his apology on Twitter, and whether or not he was aware of that response, it seemed to have taken a weight off his shoulders.

Because none of the people calling out Taylor's attire wanted him blacklisted from science, or punished, or to run into a corner and cry. The coolest people in the world (like the ones who land probes on comets) should also be held to the highest standards -- they're the ones that the children of the world are watching for cues.

And for young women in the world, a shirt covered in hyper-sexualized women does not send a good message, conscious or otherwise.

Yeah, his arms bother me more than his shirt. Not because they are tattoos, but because I don’t know what the heck they are depicting....

Matt then stuck his foot into his mouth with the following off color joke.

Why do women wear white for their weddings?

So the dishwasher matches the appliances.

What?

I love science but suck at math so watching the science channel is my best option.

My point is this.

He knew he would have his picture taken.

He chose to wear that shirt anyways.

The big question I have is...why...

There was no need for an HR department in the 20’s or 30’s to ensure that GROWN MEN didn’t wear such clothing to WORK in an educated professional department.

I defy you to find any picture from NASA from before 1975 of any of the TRUE greats in the field of space discovery clothed in such a fashion. Much less when they KNEW they would have their picture taken.

He’s wearing SHORTS for heavens sake.

Is the ESA some sort of fraternity house or are there any grown up men on the premises?

While I agree that for the MOST part HR departments are the venue of much evil, the problem is that they became necessary over the past 80 or so years because people lost much of their sense of propriety and modesty. Among other things.

Good grief. The world is rapidly being overtaken by liberal self important arbitrators of political correctness, and Islamic extremists. Both of which are most certainly control freaks acting out on a global scale.

If you’d like to support this man’s right, (and our’s as well), to wear unusual clothing of questionable taste, please follow the link and drop the guy a line.

I worked with this caliber (of education) type of person for over a decade. Never ever enountered this sort of thing.

He may be very very good and his superiors have overlooked his particular ‘eccentricity’ like this. I worked with some guys who had extremely unorthodox ‘outside lives’. Geeks are freaks and all that. But they never ever brought anything like this to work with them. Work was work and the outside was the outside.

That he can’t separate the two indicates at the very least an extreme lack of personal disicpline in social matters.

double ++++ from the southern belle society!
Love your post.

I miss those days. Sometimes I watch old movies just to enjoy the fashions when people actually cared enough to put a little bit of effort into their dress. And it wasn’t just in the movies, you look at any old photographs, high school yearbooks, etc - people used to put in some effort, iron their clothes, tuck their shirts in, and generally make an effort to look refined. Now you get made fun of if you dress up too much, but in those days people actually wanted to look the best they possibly could.

Other than on sailors, I find all tattoos disgusting. Just have no use for them. But they’re very popular with the younger generation (at least for now). I doubt too many under 30 find anything distressing about his tattoos.

But I’m thinking there’s a fortune to be made out there in another 10-20 years when they want to get them removed.

Never tatoo or pierce any body part that will stretch or otherwise become deformed if you become pregnant or gain more than 10 lbs.

Always a good rule to live by.
