Bill Cassidy standing with Phil Robertson, Sarah Palin right move to motivate his base, experts say

The Republican unity tour with former rivals Rep. Bill Cassidy and Rob Maness will continue Saturday (Nov. 15) afternoon with a rally featuring the two of them, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson.

Maness drew 14 percent of the vote in the primary, and Cassidy needs that to defeat Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu. Though Palin and Robertson are sometimes controversial figures outside the most conservative circles, political observers believe Cassidy is doing the right thing by aligning himself with the right wing of the party to earn that support.

LSU political scientist Robert Hogan said he was "shocked" when he heard Cassidy would appear with Robertson because of how controversial he has become, but he said Cassidy's willingness to stand with him says less about Cassidy and more about the electorate. He said the most important thing for Cassidy is to mobilize the base, which isn't done by drifting toward the middle in Louisiana.

"It seems clear given the ideological stand point of (Maness) supporters and the come-togetherness that they will give their support to Cassidy," Hogan said. "Maness wasn't puling from the middle. The Tea Party is motivated, and they usually vote in elections."

Joshua Stockley, a political scientist at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, said Cassidy does risk alienating some moderate voters as he drifts further right, but that's ok because motivating the base should be his top priority.

"In midterm elections, moderates and independents are less likely to show up than Democrats and Republicans. I don't think he minds the trade-off," Stockley said. "For Cassidy, moderates are a bonus. They're icing on the cake."

This could be a win-win, since Landrieu might just bully Obama into signing off on Keystone, and still lose.

But who’s going to campaign for Porky Landreau?

The Obama’s?
Joe Biden?
Harry Reid?
Nancy Pelosi?
Hillary?

Let’s face it The Dem Leadership just doesn’t have the best intentions for Louisiana.

OTOH, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Sarah Palin all feel right at home campaigning against her.

At least the author is smart enough to realize who the base is and who motivate them as one the their own.
