In September a Russian plane buzzed a Canadian warship in the Black Sea during Russian combat training near the Crimean port of Sevastopol, coming within 300 metres and causing the HMCS Toronto to lock its radar on the plane in anticipation of firing in self defence. Russia has denied the flight was provocative, and said it was routine.
Other airspace incursions have been noted over the Arctic, where Russia and Canada have disputed claims to energy resources.
These are not merely exercises in international airspace or waters, but rather they are provocations, almost an invitation to an accident, said Aurel Braun, a professor of international relations at the University of Toronto, now a visiting professor at Harvard.
They are increasing in frequency, intensity, and recklessness, he said.
As winter approaches, there are fears Mr. Putins next move could be to cut off gas to Ukraine or to Europe....
His stage is global, but his audience is largely domestic, and it is this duality that gives rise to the strange image of a tiny man in elevator shoes, as Prof. Braun put it, who still manages to stand astride the world like a colossus, exerting power through empty gestures, like riding bareback on a Siberian horse, flying with rare cranes in a glider, or diving into the Black Sea and coming up with ceramic antiquities. ....
To Mr. Putin, as Prof. Braun describes it, the danger of Ukraine has never been about outright conflict with NATO, for which Russia is no match. Rather, the fear is that Ukraine could become a successful democracy integrated with Europe, a large Slavic state transcending the fortunes of modern Russia.
It would undermine his legitimacy, Prof. Braun said, and so if Mr. Putin cannot control Ukraine, he would rather destroy it.

Its your RIGHT to get free Russian gas in perpetuity??
LOL. If that's your take from what I posted above (now in bold) then you're and idiot.
Putin will continue doing what’s best for Russia and Russian speakers in neighboring territories. Why is this surprising to the world? The West is determined to engage him in a war and when Putin shows a little muscle, the West screams, the sky is falling. NO US TROOPS TO UKRAINE, let them fight their own battles. No gas to Ukraine, we need it here. No world war over Ukraine. We’re broke already.
Putin may have the usual characteristics of a Russian strongman from the KGB, but he sure is a metrosexual guy who almost seems gay in his faking of his phony North Korean types poses to appear masculine.
The man is queer bait, butch.
No need to worry son. There isn't a snowballs chance in hell Obama would ever send troops against Russia to Ukraine.
I never want to see the evil empire reassemble itself and threaten the world’s existence again, the West protects itself from the deadly evils of Russia.
No, but we did just conduct military exercises in Ukraine.
Poroshenko is fit to be tied Ukraine’s still in the current state of affairs..and he’s majorly upset with outside leaders they have not given more to assist. But this is typical of Ukraine when run by Oligarchs.....
Ukraine and Russia had finally agreed a deal for Ukraine to get its energy supplies for the winter, with Ukraine agreeing to pay its back debts of $1bn and to pay for future energy in installments....However where is the money going to come from for installments when??? It will need to get a commitment from the EU/IMF ... both of which are stalling on stumping up more money because the Ukraine economy is on its knees ....and both the government and Ukraines private sector are close to defaulting on their debts.
Ukraine’s $12.6bn reserve is not going going to carry them far after spending billions servicing foreign debts, protecting the currency and repaying parts of a Russian gas bill.
Added to this and despite the election of a new parliament, a new coalition government has not yet been formed. So they aren’t even set yet to operate the country as they need to be.
Even if EU/IMF hand over the second loan promised of $17bil. it’s likely not going to be enough because their economy has imploded, as predicted last August.
So Poroshenka has to shake things up enough to get the International Community to act.
No the”queers” ( as you say) are all in the military here now with pregnant women. We are finished with any real combat. I guess anyone can fly a joy stick but what if we have to actually fight?
You've yet to show me any of it, Troll.
Gotta admit, you are a real looney toon. I hope EuromaidanPR/Svoboda is paying you well.
I wish someone was paying me. For the cause of liberty I have to post for free, unlike you Lubyanka trolls.
By gang raping women and shooting artillery rounds into Ukrainian cities they claim to be "liberating"? You're clueless.
“You’ve yet to show me any of it, Troll.”
lol...
I’ve shown you plenty of it, with links, numerous times.
You have CHOSEN to ignore anything not pre-approved by your Svoboda paymasters.
FR has been invaded by Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church types who want to picket the funerals of KIA US patriots with “God Hates Fags” signs. What a bunch a low-life scumbags.
Nope you’ve never proved any of your dirty anti-American Putinista lies. Everything you post is treacherous lies because you are a dirty traitor.
I don’t think links to Russia Today really count.
Funny you should bring up Svoboda: in the Ukraine’s current parliament, they hold a grand total of 6 out of out of 450 seats. Something tells me that they would make for poor “paymasters”.
Meanwhile, Putin has hundreds of paid trolls churning out his propaganda 24/7.
Just about a year ago. He's gonna start a World War before he's done.
I predict a return to Cuba.
No, but you do say plenty of times that you've shown it to me "plenty of times." Still waiting on the first one though, troll.
John McCain is a hero compared to the coward Putin who never fought in combat in his life.
