I think they were tested off the coast of Africa, there was a big stink and a lot of speculation, that was years ago and I don't remember much about it.
That has long been speculated but the problem I have with it being a nuke test is that as far as I know, no fallout was ever detected.

The problem with the 1979 South Indian Ocean nuke test speculation is the lack of detected fallout. The flash detected by satellites may have been from a meteor/comet like the one that recently flashed over Siberia.
