I think this crap began with the "fake chase" of OJ Simpson. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems that was the precursor for all the namby-pambyism we see.

They blocked the boondoggle of our stupid streetcar in Tucson last night. It was shut down from 7:30 pm on. The city council that wasted money on this “alternative” transportation will to brace themselves, because these anarchist will make it their pet project their target from now on.

MMMhhhh. That reminds me: Once upon a time in a small Missouri town there was a man who terrorized the entire city. He threatened citizens, created a reign of terror I can’t remember all the details. There wasn’t enough to lock him up and throw a way the key, and there was an altercation where people were certain he was going to kill someone.
Next thing you know, he was dead. It is thought that several of the men with hunting rifles shot him dead in his pick up. IIRC, it was in town too. No one saw or heard anything. Murder/vigilante justice was never solved.
It was made into a movie, but I don’t remember the name.
Missouri has had some radical vigilantes in the history of the state. Not always with good results.
