Maher is an independent who belives the Democrats are not far left enough like Berni Sanders. At times called himself a libertarian while he supports gun control and cap and trade.

Open primary idea has been rejected by the voters.

Translation: he wants Democrats to help nominate a RINO.

Rand Paul has no idea how a political party actually works.

Yeah. That’s just what we need. We need more open “nonpartisan” primaries so Democrats can pick our candidates, too.

I agree. Rand Paul is only slightly better than his dad. They are not conservative. We can ally with them on some issues, but have no doubt they oppose us on issues very near and dear to conservatives. In my opinion, they put libertarian ideology ahead of reality.

so Paul - the younger - is looking for a “Republican” POTUS candidacy secured by victories weighted, he thinks, in his favor by non-Republicans voting in “non-partisan” primaries

the branch does not fall far from the tree

I like SOME of Paul’s ideas. This is NOT one of them.

I had so much hope for him, but letting Dems into Republican primaries has been a disaster for the party.

Is this the best Libertarians have to offer the GOP??? Wow.

Another Republican not interested in reaching out to Conservative voters who stayed home 2008/2012 because the GOP didn’t reach out to them.

Open primaries is stupid. I do believe in runoff style primaries where top 2 candidates run off if none get more than 50%. I believe those type of primaries help unite the party behind the candidate that finally wins. Open primaries on the other hand let marginal voters who don’t really give a damn about a party choose party candidates which is counterproductive.

Is this clown unaware that it was democrats that won the republican primary in Mississippi?

It’s liberals that put GOPe clowns like Lindsey Graham in office.

Rand is a 1st rate clown.

If Rand cannot win the Republican nomination, he’s more than welcome to start his own party. He’ll likely peel off more Democrats (particularly the young, techie types that Obama swept) than Republicans.

The BIGGEST PROBLEM with Republican Primaries is that they are WAY TOO OPEN. If people who have NO INTEREST in voting for the winner are allowed to participate in a Primary, there is a HUGE PROBLEM, as we saw in Mississippi. Unfortunately, that mess works in favor of The Establishment, so nothing is likely to change.

McCain would have never won the republican nomination without open primaries. The campaign was wrapped up by time he had gotten to South Carolina. He had never won a majority of REPUBLICAN VOTERS before he got there. He had pretty much wrapped up the nomination without republican voters.

Open primaries are horrible for republicans. The media tells demos who to vote for. They select losers for the republicans.

Rand is the Rinos’ best friend. His father got votes mostly from libertarian sorts who probably wouldn’t have voted for a conservative anyway in a primary. Rand will get some of those votes, but he will also siphon some percentage of conservatives votes away from any real conservatives.

Rand is getting lots of good exposure from the MSM and some voters who aren’t paying close attention will consider him to be a conservative. He’ll make it harder for any real conservative to win primaries.
