MILFORD, Conn. (Reuters) - Connecticut said on Wednesday that it will provide special driver's licenses for illegal immigrants starting next week to help stop them from driving the state's roads unregistered and uninsured.
The move comes days after President Barack Obama issued an executive order protecting millions of undocumented immigrants across the country from deportation, which state officials said could boost participation in their drivers' license program.
"There are many undocumented immigrants driving without a driver's license who aren’t insured or registered, and we believe making that possible is very important," said Mike Lawlor, Connecticut's undersecretary for criminal justice policy and planning.
He estimated the number of illegal immigrants in Connecticut was in the tens of thousands.
Undocumented immigrants aged 16 and over, unable to establish their legal presence in the United States or lacking a Social Security number, will be permitted to start making online appointments on the Department of Motor Vehicles’ website next week to schedule a written test for a "Drive Only License," officials said.
The test will be offered in several languages, including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and Polish.

Among other problems, what happens when people have to pay money to take driver’s ed, and get a license?
What happens when people find they have to pay out big bucks to pay for required car insurance?
I can imagine more than a few of these “immigrants” will say to heck with all of that, and just continue driving unlicensed and uninsured.
They could make a law that if the illegal alien steals a car, the car insurance goes with it. That would stop many uninsured illegal immigrant drivers.

And they think they will actually get auo insurance? They’ll have insurance cards in their glove boxes but when you call in the claim you’ll find out Julio’s insurance card is a fraud. You’ll also find out that the driver’s license that they “left at home” never existed and belongs to someone else halfway across the state show’s never heard of ‘em and just made up the number off the topic his head like they do SSNs when they destroy someone else’s credit.
What the “I know better than you” bureaucrats fail to realize is illegal immigrants don’t like to be tracked. They don’t want to give you their date of birth or their real name and especially not their home address lest their autos get repossessed and the hospitals come looking for them to pay their bills not to mention the utility and credit card companies. I’m speaking from a position decades of experience having to deal with them and track them down, dealing with all of their forged or self made-up identities not to mention lots of criminal activity and auto accidents that killed LAWFUL citizens who actually pay their taxes or their children who died because of their twice or triple the blood alcohol count over the limit. This is a very common occurrence too.

The only problem is this -— Drivers licenses are in practice, universally recognized in the USA as a valid ID card.
What that would mean for other states is anybody’s guess.
There are some interesting twists to this one.
The feds have been pushing REAL ID hard for years, as a national identity card. But a lot of states are refusing to join in, because they would have to pay for it, and the people of their states don’t want it.
But because driver’s licenses are the primary ID cards in use, when liberal states issues driver’s licenses to illegal aliens, it creates a problem.
States currently have reciprocity with each other, to recognize driver’s licenses issued by other states. But if some states issue licenses to illegal aliens, other states may have no choice but to refuse to recognize licenses issued by that state.
Otherwise, illegal aliens can get driver’s licenses in one state, then travel to another state and use their license as a form of ID to carry out fraud.
So a state like Connecticut may be screwing its own citizens down the line, unless they have some other form of picture ID card not issued to illegal aliens and recognized by other states.
