Occidental Students Confront A Reality Of Political Campaigns: Defeat

By JASON SONG

For a semester, Occidental students spent 12-hour days campaigning for candidates -- and lost Occidental College students worked for credit on various political campaigns and got a dose of reality The midterm elections were over. The 11 campaign workers from Occidental College returned to class. But first, they heard from a school reverend.

"You win some, you lose some," Susan Young told the group. It's perfectly OK, she said, to have trouble readjusting to college life or to feel out of place.

In what is believed to be the only college program of its kind, the undergraduates in the Campaign Semester course spent at least 2 1/2 months, often seven days a week, 12 hours a day, working on behalf of candidates in contested states.

None won.

I don't think our representative government is broken, but I do think it's become less democratic and it's difficult to get good people in office. - Joshua Wodka, senior who worked for North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan Many were resoundingly defeated, although two students worked for the reelection campaign of Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, who is in a runoff. All of the students worked for Democratic candidates; Republicans swept the mid-terms and took control of the House and Senate.

Don’t they get a first place trophy and a gold medal for trying?

I’m guessing that working on democrat campaigns brought a higher grade.

Its like my niece said about the “LUGs” (Lesbian Until Graduation) at Western Mi University. The whole system gave them breaks and accommodated them due to their “oppression” so girls started using it to get all the breaks.

I heard about that, the girls here referred to it as “Gay Until Grad”. Same stuff in the pile, different cow...

Congress should investigate this. The use of federal funds for partisan political purposes. Of course, they’ll claim First Amendment rights to campaign for whomever they choose. But Congress can attach strings and say no funding for any political campaigns.

Damn — that makes a LOT of sense! No matter what you do, someone will find a way to exploit it.

I have always said if I wan’t married I would have RUN to the courthouse steps after gay “marriage” with a petition to marry my mom, best friend, sister and sister’s best friend. Since there is no argument that can be made for two gays that can’t be made for 3+ of any or no familial relationship.

When liberals are trucked into a conservative state, then they don’t understand the people who live here. MAYBE this reality lesson as well as actually having to work for a living when they graduate will wake SOME up~!

So glad that Hagan lost in N.C.

What were the “breaks” that LUGs were “entitled” too? Monetary ones in the form of reduced fees, or their own club supported by university dues, or?

I’ve heard the term “LICO” or Lesbian in College Only. But LUGs fits better.

Pol Pot had the right idea. These political nymphs should be dropped in the Alaskan frontier and told to survive. We wouldn’t have very many of them to deal with later.

In the People’s Republic, there should be no such things as lost elections, comrade.

I don't think our representative government is broken, but I do think it's become less democratic .

I guess he's right. There are a lot less Democrats in the government starting next year. :)

What a whiner! Our side lost in a historic defeat because the electorate was really pissed off at the way Democrats were governing so that means that government is less democratic.

What an idiot. The government can only be fare if we are in charge.

The part I find most unnerving and disturbing about this is that EVERY campaign they worked on was for a democrat.

You shouldn't be. Occidental is famous as a bastion of leftist education. Obama is graduate.
