U.S. Army wants a new gun

After about 30 years of using the Beretta as the primary sidearm pistol for the U.S. military, the Pentagon is seeking a new gun contract.

For gun manufacturers, this kind of a contract is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

While the Beretta lasted three decades, the U.S. military's first semiautomatic standard-issue sidearm, the M1911 from Colt, lasted nearly 90 years. It was issued during the U.S. war in the Philippines through the World Wars to Vietnam and beyond.

(5.7mm will ding off of sapi plates though, even crappy ones).

True for just about any handgun round. True?

“40 S&W makes more sense.”
The 10mm auto might be better. drive a 200 gr. bullet at 1150 to 1200 fps. it would be faster than a 40 but operate at or below the pressure of a 40. It would have superior penetration compared to a 45. This is a big plus when shooting into a car.
Ether way they both offer a good compromise of caliber and magazine capacity.

The 45ACP is a pussycat round to shoot, it is NOT a wrist breaker.

I heartily agree!

After putting 50 rounds through a Walther PPKs in .380, the recoil from a 1911 in 45ACP felt like a .22.

Neither .40 S&W or BREN 10 mm will be the chosen round. Both have a recoil impulse greater than the .45 ACP. Recoil was one of the main reasons for going to the 9 mm.

Except the FBI just shifted to 9 mm because the .40 was to much round for them.

Where did you get that photo?

It is disturbing on so many levels it is hard to list them all.

All the AKs (I'll be not one of them has ever been zeroed in on a bench)
The wedding dress
The Confederate battle flag on the t-shirt background
The naked Barbie under the arm pit.
The guy with the white swim cap
The kid in pajamas, slippers, and a pot on his head
The guy in the background with green hands on a red shirt

Well...just about true. ;)

IIRC Thompson center fire pistols have been made in the belted magnum calibers (7mm, 300WinMag, etc.) Buddy of mine fired a .30-06 SPFD API out of his handgun at one of our MG shoots. Crazy. Of course southern rednecks like me just eat that %$*# up!

Why do some folks still use the cartridge terminology of ".45 ACP"?

That designation was obsoleted by SAAMI in 1940 and replaced with ".45 Auto". SAAMI and the American National Standards Institute are the authorities, not a bunch of wannabe gun nuts.

Where have they been? Reading too much from gun writers, the majority of whom gained their entire education on the subject by reading other gun writer's drivel"

The U.S. military has never chambered any of their type classed weapons for the .45 ACP or .45 Auto cartridges. Not the 1911 serious of pistols, not the 1917 Revolvers, not the Thompson sub machine gun series, not the M3 Grease Gun series, not the Liberator Pistol, not the Reising submachine gun, etc. They were all chambered for the Cartridge, Ball, Caliber 45, Model 1911.

And for the neophytes, the .45 ACP, .45 Auto, .45 Auto+P and Caliber 45 Model 1911 are different cartridges even though most dimensions are similar. Each is manufactured and acceptance tested with completely different Technical Data Packages. The pressure specifications are different and not even tested with the same type equipment and procedures. The numbers are not interchangeable. Every box of ammunition made by SAAMI members and other responsible manufactures carries some form of the warning, "Only use ammunition that exactly matches the markings on your gun" Read the headstamp stupid! And don't waste your and other's time with silly lists of the exceptions you can find that document ignorant or irresponsible manufacturers. Some folks are just real slow in getting the word. Lift yourself above that level.

Good day.

Two words.

Hague Convention.

In civilian terms JHP’s can trump the “starts with 4” rule. In the military bullets that are designed to expand get you before a war crimes tribunal.

Just kidding.

Google "Liberian civil war" and click "images".

You'll find more such nonsense as the "life preserver guy" (Who was so stupid that he put on a coast guard life jacket thinking it would "preserve his life" in a firefight", and my favorite, the "swinging cactus guy".

IMHO....the MSM should have been showing these photos to us before committing our troops to the hell-hole of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Thanks, I’d forgotten. Looked like it was assembled like a fine watch. My ex still has it I guess..Reason I say I guess is...(here comes another story. When your 53y.o. you collect a few)

My wife pitched a fit for that pistol when we divorced in ‘87. Baby daddy of her kids moved in soon afterwards. Great guy! Really. She didn’t deserve him. So fast forward 27 years later. He shot himself in the head with that pistol. Finally drove him completely nuts. Better him than me I guess.

Sir, I do believe that everyone is missing a very important point! Why does the Army need a NEW pistol? Can anyone describe an event where a Soldier, Marine, Sailor, Airman has actually used a Pistol in Combat. With multiple combat deployments I know of ZERO. The M9, although I personally hate the thing, is just as capable, while being toted around on the hip, as any other sidearm.
Why do we allow the DOD to get away with this foolishness. This is not an issue of National Security or safety. The pistol is a weapon of last resort and serves to give the Officers, Senior NCO, pilots and Technicians a means to defend themselves. USSOCOM, the only guys that actually ma use the pistol, already have a different gun. This is just wasted money on a sham requirement. In 14 years of War, nobody has required the pistol. Just as soon as a “Pistol Bearer” is sent outside the wire, they grad a M4-M16A4. I could get interested IF they were talking about a Service Rifle.

The 1911 slabsides has never been improved upon. The 9mm interregnum was a mistake.

A pistol’s only function in a combat situation is to allow you to fight your way to your RIFLE!!

The 45ACP was designed to put down Juramentados who did not feel the .38 Colt.

Why try to improve on a successful cartridge unless you go to a .45 truncated bullet?

Stop talking sense, man. The money would be better spent at the range.

If personnel qualified with more than 50 rounds, they’d do better. I have an M9 and don’t have any doubt that it will stop an aggressor at pistol distance. Course I’ve run a few thousand rounds through it...
