Even Salon Now Doubts Rolling Stone Rape Story
NewsBusters ^ | December 4, 2014 | P.J. Gladnick

The rising doubts about the Rolling Stone rape story at a University of Virginia fraternity have become so widespread that now even Salon is becoming skeptical. However, Salon writer Erin Keane admits she completely bought into the story until other sources began checking it out. The admission can be seen in the headline of her story: "Rolling Stone’s UVA rape story backlash: When narratives are so compelling that we don’t notice unbalanced reporting."

What's with this "we" business, kemosabe? Within five days of the publication of the Rolling Stone story, a former editor of George magazine published his doubts about the story. Soon others also weighed in expressing skepticism of the story in which the author didn't even attempt to interview the alleged perpetrators. So here is Keane admitting to having emotionally swallowed the story hook, line, and sinker until more rational heads weighed in:

Wow. When you've lost Salon .....

Never fear. They'll just take a page out of 0bama's book (pun intended) and say that it was a "COMPOSITE" of some things that really did happen.

The liberal world is full of old nightmares, wet dreams and dusty recollections of helpless liberal and minority females being ravished by out of control, lusty, hirsute, white republicans.

Really modern liberals don’t limit those fantasies to just the ravishment of females.

This rape story is just like the Michael Brown case - it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TRUTH!

They are just attempting to use these stories and the BS as a means to an end! The “hands up, don’t shoot” meme is just complete BS - forensics PROVES this; but at this point we are suppose to “feel” bad about racism and police brutality!!

The rape took place in the wrong season, none of the frat members worked at the swim center at that time, and no party was being had on the weekend on their docket; but we are suppose to “feel” sorry for and persecute frats, colleges and UVa for their rape culture!!

Like with everything else the liberal left does - forget reasoning and common sense! Use your feelings and emotions to drive you to madness and anger and action! This is what Holder and Obama have been spewing since they took over their respective offices.

Lena Dunhams story was more believable.

Seriously! I read what this was about and could not get past the first paragraph without thinking that it sounded straight out of some bad short story written by some idiot 20 year old women’s study major on Tumblr.

She should have gotten a letter from 88 or so UVA professors who also didn't bother to fact check her narrative.

Oh yes, I wonder how many lawyers the UVA administration have approached about defending them from the upcoming defamation suits certain to be filed by the accused fraternity.

“The alleged assault, described in graphic detail, is presented largely without traditional qualifiers, such as “according to Jackie” or “allegedly.” The absence of such attribution or qualification leaves the impression that the events in question are undisputed facts, rather than accusations. Erdely said, however, that her writing style makes it clear that the events are being told from Jackie’s point of view. “

Because if they actually name names, then RS could be sued into the ground. They will gladly run this trash, but they are going to make her take the fall when it all starts to crash in.

Lawyers for the Frat are probably preparing a massive lawsuit against Rolling Stone right now.

The Washington Post has a good column on how incredibly evasive the writer of the RS piece was in an interview with Slate. In fact, this might be the single most evasive interview I've ever read!

---

When asked repeatedly on that Slate podcast whether she’d interviewed the accused, Erdely sounded evasive. Here’s a rough transcript of the back-and-forth:

Slate DoubleX Podcast: Did they respond about this, did they deny it? What was their response to the allegations?

Erdely: There was never a need for a response until I stepped in apparently because it wasn’t until I started asking questions that the university put them under some kind of investigation or so they said. It was unclear to me whether there was actually an investigation. The university said that they were under investigation but when I spoke to the Phi Psi chapter and also to the Phi Psi national representative, both of them said that they were not aware of any kind of university investigation….

Slate: But did the boys say anything to you? The thing about it is that everybody in the story seems to know who they are…

Erdely: There’s no doubt that — people seem to know who these people are….I would speculate that life inside a frat house is a probably, you know, you have this kind of communal life where everybody is sort of sharing information…People are living lives closely with one another and it seems impossible to imagine that people didn’t know about this.

Slate: Did they try to contact you? Did you try and call them. Was there any communication between you and them?

Erdely: Yeah, I reached out to them in multiple ways. They were kind of hard to get in touch with because their contact page was pretty outdated, but I wound up speaking…with their local president who sent me an email and then I talked with their national guy who’s kind of like their national crisis manager –

Slate: But not the actual boys –

Erdely: They were both helpful in their own way, I guess. All they really said was, they both claim to have been really shocked by the allegations when they were told by the university. And they both said that this is a really tragic thing and if only we had more information we could look into it and that’s the end of that.

Those answers look bad for Rolling Stone. Perhaps Erdely didn’t understand what she was being asked — that is, whether she spoke with the actual alleged perpetrators themselves. She answers only the much different question of whether she spoke to fraternity management, a much less central matter.

This lapse is inexcusable: Even if the accused aren’t named in the story, Erdely herself acknowledges that “people seem to know who these people are.” If they were being cited in the story for mere drunkenness, boorish frat-boy behavior or similar collegiate misdemeanors, then there’d be no harm in failing to secure their input. The charge in this piece, however, is gang rape, and so requires every possible step to reach out and interview them, including e-mails, phone calls, certified letters, FedEx letters, UPS letters and, if all of that fails, a knock on the door. No effort short of all that qualifies as journalism.

OK, so far I get that she didn’t talk to any of the men accused of this. Did she talk to the UVa administrators? Did she talk to the gal’s “friends” (they sound like very poor excuses for friends)? Did she talk to anybody besides this woman Jackie?

What did I hear the other day, the reporter’s creed used to be: if your mother tells you she loves you, check it out, don’t just take her word for it.

It wasn’t journalism-journalism.

The most telling revelation is that the complaining witness has yet to file a complaint with police. Why not?

http://time.com/3616263/uva-rape-investigation/

No Formal Police Investigation Yet in UVA Rape Case

Asked by TIME for a response, Charlottesville Police spokesman Captain Gary Pleasants said he could not confirm that a formal investigation was under way and reiterated a previous statement that the department was “evaluating the next steps.” He added, “In most cases, a formal investigation would be launched when a victim of a crime or witness to that crime makes a report to the police.”

That’s what a good story written extremely well should do. That’s art.

Thank you, Mrs. Goebbels.
