Victor Davis Hanson: A large war is looming
The Fresno Bee ^ | December 6, 2014 | Victor Davis Hanson

The world is changing and becoming even more dangerous — in a way we’ve seen before.

In the decade before World War I, the near-100-year European peace that had followed the fall of Napoleon was taken for granted. Yet it abruptly imploded in 1914. Prior little wars in the Balkans had seemed to predict a much larger one on the horizon — and were ignored.

The exhausted Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires were spent forces unable to control nationalist movements in their provinces. The British Empire was fading. Imperial Germany was rising. Czarist Russia was beset with revolutionary rebellion. As power shifted, decline for some nations seemed like opportunity for others.

The same was true in 1939. The tragedy of the Versailles Treaty of 1919 was not that it had been too harsh. In fact, it was far milder than the terms Germany had imposed on a defeated Russia in 1918 or the requirements it had planned for France in 1914.

Instead, Versailles combined the worst of both worlds: harsh language without any means of enforcement.

The subsequent appeasement of Britain and France, the isolationism of the United States, and the collaboration of the Soviet Union with Nazi Germany green-lighted Hitler’s aggression — and another world war.

We are entering a similarly dangerous interlude. Collapsing oil prices — a good thing for most of the world — will make troublemakers like oil-exporting Iran and Russia take even more risks.

Please Keep Victor Davis Hanson in Your Thoughts and Prayers
pjmedia ^ | Nov. 18, 2014

We at PJ Media were saddened to learn that the daughter of Victor Davis Hanson, author, educator, and PJ Media columnist, died on November 13 after a short illness.

Susannah Merry Hanson was 27.

In a beautiful, moving tribute to his daughter, Dr. Hanson tells us of Susannah’s marvelous gifts:

Susannah, known to her family and friends as “Suzy,” was beloved by anyone who encountered her infectious laugh and her zeal for life and adventure. But she was perhaps best known for the human kindness she extended to everyone she met. She was especially drawn to the sick and elderly, which reflected her sense of public service. On the European trips she ensured that no tour member was ever left alone or without companionship.

Her family and friends feel blessed that even for such a brief time that they were able to be with such a kind soul and accomplished talent. She grew up packing fruit and working in the fields of the family farm, a childhood that fostered a singular work ethic, gave her a sense of independence and fearlessness, and grounded her in reality and modesty wherever she worked and traveled. She loved the San Joaquin Valley, and despite her residence and visits abroad, she always managed to return to the farm, where she felt most at home with her family and childhood friends.

Please keep our friend and colleague, Victor Davis Hanson, in your thoughts and prayers

Same article, headline in Townhall.com:

War Clouds.

Same article, headline in NationalReviewonline.com:

War Clouds on the Horizon?

The editor writes the headline.

Thanks.

You don’t see me writing blog posts predicated upon the fact that I assume that I know more than you, nor do I preface my posts with my name.

You wish to fawn over this guy, go ahead.

I’m sure he really likes it when you do that.

You are assuming that VDH writes the headline. I doubt that he does but, if it makes you want to go of on yourself, I hope that he does write the headlines...

In the past, shooting wars across national boundaries in the Middle East grew out of crashing oil prices. Since there barely *are* any national boundaries there any longer, that’s scarcely any risk at all. Pooty-Poot has been getting his ass handed to him with the cratering crude and sanctions over his invasion and occupation of Ukrainian territory; he can’t pull the plug on his aggression, but he can’t afford it either. We’re actually further from the brink than we have been in some time — assuming one ignores the fact that there’s more paramilitary action than at any time since the USSR and Red China were in their postwar prime of pushing violent overthrow of gov’ts all over the world.

So sorry to hear about Susannah Merry Hanson. I will keep the Hanson family in my prayers. VDH is a treasure to read. His knowledge of history makes his writings all the more prescient. He knows what he is talking about.
