Communion alone is ‘not the solution’ for divorced and re-married Catholics, says Pope Francis
Catholic Herald ^ | 12/08/2014 | Madeleine Teahan

Posted on 12/08/2014 6:19:59 AM PST by GIdget2004

In an interview with the Argentine daily newspaper, La Nacion, in which he discussed the family synod, the challenges of his papacy and reforming the Roman Curia, Pope Francis said: “In the case of divorcees who have remarried, we posed the question, what do we do with them? What door can we allow them to open? This was a pastoral concern: will we allow them to go to Communion? Communion alone is no solution.

“The solution is integration. They have not been excommunicated, true. But they cannot be godfathers to any child being baptised, mass readings are not for divorcees, they cannot give Communion, they cannot teach Sunday school, there are about seven things that they cannot do, I have the list over there. Come on! If I disclose any of this it will seem that they have been excommunicated in fact. Thus, let us open the doors a bit more.”

The Pope continued: “Why can’t they be godfathers and godmothers? ‘No, no, no, what testimony will they be giving their godson?’ The testimony of a man and a woman saying ‘my dear, I made a mistake, I was wrong here, but I believe our Lord loves me, I want to follow God, I was not defeated by sin, I want to move on’. Anything more Christian than that? And what if one of the political crooks among us, corrupt people, are chosen to be somebody´s godfather. If they are properly wedded by the Church, would we accept them? What kind of testimony will they give to their godson? A testimony of corruption? Things need to change, our standards need to change.”

A did not want to be divorced, did nothing to warrant it, but it happened anyway. Now A is totally alone, goes to Mass alone but is perfectly in line with the Catholic Church. A relies on God only. It is miserable, A is sad, horrified.

So say B cuts out, remarries wants to act like he is good and pure, is he in the same posture as A? NO! B just wants to be approved of.

Communism is not the right answer for anything good.

I thought these people had left the Church decades ago; the Church cannot bend on this issue (regardless of who is Pope).

Knew two kids whose lawyer father annulled his first marriage of close to 30 years instead of divorcing. Had them sign papers to make them “bastards” in the eyes of the Catholic church or he would cut them out of his substantial will. I see the lawyer every so often when I go back to my hometown, out at dinner with his new wife and kids and I ask him about his first two kids just for spite.

Annulment does not make children “bastards”.

Is the Pope Catholic?

Nope.

That’s pretty much it. With reasonable circumstances (and $600.00-$1000.00 donation), an annulment just takes some time and its back to good standing.

One can still receive communion after a divorce.
Remarriage without an annulment is a different matter.

Costs about $300-$400.
The Church only asks for it if they think you can pay it.

That’s what one of the kids told me, that because of the papers her father made her sign, she was no longer a child of a “legitimate” Catholic marriage in the eyes of the church and therefore a bastard now. I don’t know, I’m not Catholic, all I know, is my friend was distraught over it and her daddy’s the real bastard.

You are not fully apprised of the the basic facts of Catholic annulment. First, it’s not either or, you can’t get annulled without first being civilly divorced, see. Secondly, annulment does not make the first children bastards, see. The bastard thing is a civil deal, and the civil divorce finds the kids are born of the marriage.

Get a clue.

However, I totally approve of you needling this prick lawyer about his first marriage.

An annulment costs just the filing fees, and amounts to no more than a couple of hundred dollars in most cases. If you are in a situation that is dubious, where the reasons for annulment are not clear cut and you are denied the annulment, you can hire your own canon lawyer in the review process, which could be costly. But the basic fees for administrative costs and document production, etc. are not very high, and can be waived in cases of necessity. Compared to what people pay for a civil divorce - which can be many thousands of dollars - an annulment is practically free.

The annulment is slower than a divorce because more consideration is given to it and in addition, the Church does not wish to make annulment something perceived, like divorce, as a speedy solution to something that could possibly be resolved some other way; nonetheless, it usually takes under two years.

And the children aren’t considered bastards.

Are you saying that living a chaste and single life that is God focused is miserable, sad and horrific? Your not saying that only Catholics that are married can be happy are you? Even if you are, is not suffering on Earth worth the joys of heaven?

Why not attempt to get an annulment?

Take a friend to church, make friends at church and join a ministry.
