As I noted last week, Lena Dunham’s memoir describes her having sex with someone named Barry, whom she labels as Oberlin’s “resident conservative.” Her description seems to leave it somewhat ambiguous as to whether Barry raped her, but it does describe some sexual behavior by Barry that at the very least reflects badly on him; readers have certainly viewed it as rape, and Dunham has elsewhere characterized it as rape. There are two passages in which she describes the incident: one in which it comes across as consensual but unsatisfying, and another one that she begins by saying,

It’s time these mentally ill women with the compulsion to get attention in their worthless lives by yelling “rape” start suffering for it. Making excuses for them, as the Leftist media is trying to do, makes them enablers for these malicious liars.

I was talking to an undergraduate friend here, and something came up that might apply to this case.

Back in undergrad (did not go to Oberlin), there was a very prominent campus Conservative who enjoyed penning these really outrageous pieces for the campus newspaper.

There was one in particular where he went full tilt against feminism. Very scathing, but also very, very funny article.

The heads of the feminists on campus pretty much exploded. Campus NOW and College Dems put out multiple letters of condemnation. There was actually a vote of condemnation brought up in the student government (it failed, but only by a couple votes).

But more important than all of that was a letter penned by a prominent campus Liberal that she was going to frame the opinion piece, keep it with her and make sure that at every and any opportunity that arose she was going to use it to attack, damage, undermine and destroy the Conservative in his future career and life.

My guess is that's what happened here. This guy didn't know Dunham, never had anything to do with her, but he did something - an op-ed, speech, etc - that really offended her to the point where she held a grudge and decided to act on it once she had the chance.

What would be interesting would be to go back, see if "Barry One" had written anything in the campus paper during the time he and Dunham attended Oberlin together. See if there was something, other than just being guilty of being a prominent Conservative at Oberlin, that would really tee her off ...
