All this protesting in white areas is wierd. Why aren’t they protesting in Oakland? That’s where the black people live. Is it because black people understand this is BS better than white liberals do?

They make their noise in a very safe and insulated world.
I could make arrangements for any of those ignorant cowards to make their noise in the hood. Once they got a reality check, they wouldn’t be coming back for more.

I don't pretend to understand the mind of a rioter, but my guess is that the rioters' interest is more in general disruption and vandalism than in trying to replicate a Fergusonian Experience by going to A Black Neighborhood.
(If they're telling the truth in their signs, chants, and interviews, apparently some of the protesters are more interested in generic goals like "bringing down the system.")
The unpeaceful marches have tended to start around such places as the plaza outside Oakland City Hall (the center of those Occupy actions) or the university campus. Maybe there's some symbolism involved, but these places are also practical hubs. They're convenient to reach, and nice intact targets are nearby.
The travel patterns are also similar to recent precedent, such as peaceful Occupy and peaceful "anti-war" protests. (If there's going to be an unplanned protest march and intersection obstruction in San Francisco, expect it somewhere around Mission or Market streets, if not both.) The protest du jour tends to taste like the one from yesterday.
All of this protesting in Berkeley is for fun. Everybody loves a good protest with a little light rioting. But when the Shit Status gets upgraded to "REAL", it is time to go home and catch up on last season of Game of Thrones.
Protest in Oakland would be much too real. That involves real rioting, with real police, real teargas, and real guns (on both sides). That does not sound like any fun at all.
