South Dakota Senator John Thune, co-chair of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, has announced that the omnibus appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2015 includes an important provision championed by Thune preventing the Obama Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from regulating lead in ammunition and fishing tackle for one year.

An excellent analysis. I wasn’t aware of Tricky Dick’s EO. I thought the 1970 Congress created the fascist EPA.

from the mouth of the EPA beast itself -

“Origins of the EPA,” President Nixon declared his intention to establish the Environmental Protection Agency with Reorganization Plan Number 3, dated July 9, 1970. Reorganization Plan Number 3 can be found in the Congressional Record, Vol 116, H 6523 (91st Congress, 2nd Session).”

Excellent post, Jim. The environmental laws are indeed a Gordian knot. I doubt that even Alexander’s sword would be up to the task of freeing us from that mess.

There is a good article in the June 2014 American Rifleman mag about the Army replacing its 556 NATO M855 round with a new “green” M855A1 lead-free round. Seems that after much development, the new M855A1 round is far better than the old lead round. The A1 uses a steel penetrator tip with a copper core. Results indicate the A1 round not only penetrates barriers such as concrete masonry, better than the old round, but also has improved terminal ballistics. While the old round penetrated 3/8 inch mild steel at up to 160 meters, the new round penetrated the same 3/8 inch mild steel out to a distance of 350 meters. Additionally, the old round began to yaw at 7 inches after penetration into the boney Taliban, which would actually exit without much damage at all, while the new round is designed to begin yaw at +3 inches of penetration in dem bag of bones. Accuracy is equal or better too. So we’ll need to watch how this plays out in other calibers, barrel twists, etc.

Lead tire weights are banned in 5 or 6 states.

Idiocy. Pure and simple idiocy.............They want to ban lead in all forms in all products. I work in the electronics industry and lead is the major component of solder. The industry has had to develop lead-free solder to replace the normal solders we used to use. Parts like resistors and capacitors, IC's and other parts must be certified as lead-free for shipment to European countries and many American companies as well...............
