Turkish police on Sunday arrested the editor of Turkey's biggest-selling newspaper and 26 others in lightning raids on supporters of a US-based cleric who has become President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's top foe.

The European Union condemned the police action, saying it went "against the European values" that Turkey aspires to as it seeks membership in the bloc.

Obama's flack says: "As Turkey's friend and ally, we urge the Turkish authorities to ensure their actions do not violate these core values and Turkey's own democratic foundations."

I don’t see a thread but The story I’m getting on twitter is that hostages are being held at a Sidney Australia cafe and are being forced to hold an ISIS flag at the window.

This is perhaps the most terrifying news of the day. I believe we count on Turkey to hold the line against extremism, and for decades they did. (Not that Obama cares.)

Erdogan needs to go.

Thanks BenLurkin. As crappy as Erdogan is, his successor is likely to be much worse. Erdogan’s defanged the Turkish military, which means that once Erdogan’s been removed by force, and replaced with a cleric, the army won’t be in a position to remove him, as the Egyptian army was able to remove Morsi.

Turkey has been veering toward islamism under Erdogan for some time. Kemalism is dead and gone, as are any hopes for the survival of democratic, populist, secular rule. This latest development is nothing but autocratic rule enforced in typical moslem strongman fashion. Too bad, but the handwriting has been on the wall for Turkey for a number of years now. If we indeed count on them for anything, it is ta our peril.

Sadly true that Turkey is moving away from sanity. I was there 20 years ago over Christmas/New Years, and Istanbul had more and cheerier decorations up than Seattle did. People were incredibly friendly and very happy to meet Americans. I was there with a very obviously Jewish friend and he was just as welcome as I was.

My friend and her husband just returned from Turkey and found Istanbul clean and friendly…they didn’t get down into the hinterlands, as I did, but still…a lot, if not most, urban, educated Turks are definitely NOT Islamists and don’t want to be.

Obama names Turkish PM Erdoğan among trusted friends

Now we know why. Obama would be happy with a handful of Fox hosts and a few websites.

Now just a cotton pickin’ minit here. Let’s be fair. Obama, once he started rounding people up, wouldn’t rest until he had a few dozen TEA Party organizers in custody, along with some AM talk show hosts.
