Sociologist Barry Glastner wrote The Culture of Fear. He told Sky News: "Americans are fairly unique as world citizens in that we tend to believe that we control our own destiny as individuals to a much greater extent than we really do."
Ironically, he points out preppers may actually be reacting to their fears in the least effective way. Dangerous weather, terrorist attacks and economic collapses are all best dealt with by higher authorities, he said.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Spoken like a good little collectivist.
I think Dominic would be amazed at how many preppers there are in Europe.
“To a much greater extent than we really do.”
Wow, pretentious and stupid simultaneously.
who’s more concerned that you live to see tomorrow, you or the m-f govt?
And it really doesn’t work when the “higher authorities” decide that you are the threat and that you are “horders” so they need to “redistribute” your stuff.
Ping.
Worked out splendidly for the folks who watched Katrina from the perspective of Nawlins.
I’m a prepper, he’s a prepper, she’s a prepper, we’re a prepper
wouldn’t you like to be a prepper too? (1977)

Preppers” PING!!
Hat tip to DuncanWaring!
I’ve said it many times: You either prepare and stand on your own beholden to no one or you become dependent on others to provide your basic needs and become their serf. Me I dont want to be beholden to anyone for providing what is needed for me and mine. I certainly dont want to have to kiss some gubberment third class bureaucratic to try and coax some help from them, I dont want some jack booted thug herding me in line and telling me where to stand, sit, eat or sleep. And last but not least I dont want to be shut up in with a bunch of zombies and have to worry about not only trying to get basic necessities but having to fight to keep what I manage to get.
It is your choice you can prep or you can stand around on a bridge waiting for FEMA to bring you a bottle of water, a MRE, a warm blanket and a kiss for your boo-boo and maybe you can even get your picture as you stand there on the national news, Berry tell me how do you think that will work out for you?
Well, here's the bottom line; you need at least 2 years and should have 7 years of supplies plus the means to secure (defend) it to be self sufficient. Anything less and you run the very real risk of death or enslavement.
We are already in a depression. A collapse is coming, likely to be followed by world war around 2025. Those who thoughtfully prepare stand the best chance to survive.
In America today; paranoid people thats UNAWARE “somebody in the government” are after them...
Are really delusional..
Hmmm. No mention of his religion. You don't have to hit me with a golden tablet to figure out he is almost certainly a Mormon.
Ever wonder why these liberals are so obsessed with what other people have? Liberals usually are obsessed with other people’s stuff.
What, like Nawlins after Katrina, or parts of New York and New Jersey after Sandy?
In a real, long-term disaster scenario, it is safe to assume that the "higher authorities" will eventually go home to look after their own families, leaving everybody else on their own.
Why is [prepper-ism] happening? Partly, no doubt, because it allows Americans to indulge in some of their favourite pastimes: consuming, camping and buying lots and lots of guns.
And partly because fear sells, drives up numbers for cable news, and increases sales for everything from dried food to assault rifles.
Liberalism holds that acceptance of "the other" is key, but at every juncture in this article, far from celebrating differences instead the author here is combatting deeply held FEARS that preppers are UNLIKE him.
He combats his fear of differences by reassuring himself that preppers are, in spite of themselves, SOMEHOW the same, somehow not less irresponsible; the prepper is INDULGING, the prepper is merely SELLING, etc. This also permits for a handy attack on COMMERCE, which is bad.
The notion that others are NOT indulging, not simply selling causes him FEAR.
What are the reasons that he sees differences between individuals and between groups as SCARY..?
Why is the author SCARED?
The other day I heard this:
Conservatives are people who prefer to be scared now, and comfortable later.
Liberals want to feel comfortable NOW, even at the cost of being scared later.
The author sees preparation efforts as reminding him that later HE WILL BE SCARED.
The author's tone is attacking because the actions of others are altering his GOOD FEELINGS --they are making him FEEL BAD, which is a new-age SIN.
“Americans are fairly unique as world citizens in that we tend to believe that we control our own destiny as individuals to a much greater extent than we really do.”
Yeh and I’m putting money on Barry Glastner being in the first die off. Waiting for the Govt to come.
To a much greater extent than we really do.
Wow, pretentious and stupid simultaneously.
Sociologist.
Duh.
Those are the ones too stupid to even be democrats.
I have been having horrible thoughts lately of the cannibalism that would ensue if the food supply was ever broken. Don’t get caught alone in the open, you’ll probably end up as dinner.
An article for those who have been on Mars for the past six years.
