The statistic is interesting. Of the most admired figures on the right in John Hawkins survey, two out of three are black:
1) Scott Walker (63)
1) Clarence Thomas (63)
1) Thomas Sowell (63)
Race I think here is mostly an accident. What the three men have in common is that they are respected without being controversial or especially partisan.
Scott Walker has kept his national presence light and is mainly known for local reforms. Clarence Thomas has been a quiet force advancing conservative ideas on the court in a slow and steady fashion without the volatility of an Alito. Sowell is currently a leading conservative scholar who avoids mendacity and partisan hackery.
Its an interesting phenomenon that two of the leading elder statement of the conservative movement are black. Its especially interesting since liberals would have trouble pointing to two equally intellectually weighty and influential black figures dominating their side.
While I do think that race is an accident here, its interesting to note that Sowell and Thomas are respected largely for the opposite qualities of the self-appointed black leaders on the liberal side. Theyre respected for being contemplative and measured leaders who dont need to shout to make themselves heard. Theyre deep thinkers. Its hard to think of more opposite figures than Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson.
And that contrast is also a measure of how much damage liberalism has done to the black community.
I have more respect for those blacks who do achieve because they have to overcome the “Crab Mentality” that permeates throughout Black culture in this country.
Thomas Sowell has been on my home page for many years. One of my very favorite writers. God blessed him with uncommon rational insight.
Agreed
I just knew you and I could agree on SOMETHING there...Merry Christmas to you OS!
What about Allen West?
They remind me of Jabba the Hutt and that silly little laughing creature in his lap.
Interesting story about Prof. Williams being a former Black Panther. Sorry to hear about his wife. I remember hearing him filling in on Rush’s show and he would often talk about “Mrs. Williams”.
I don’t totally agree. I like Thomas, not because he’s quiet and contemplative or whatever, but because he’s right more often than Scalia or Alito. More originalist, more willing to limit improper government power, less willing to maintain past wrong decisions. I WISH he were more bombastic and pushy. Moderation in the protection of my freedom is no virtue.
I agree with you, your assessment of Clarence Thomas is much the same as mine. I would particularly like him to be more outspoken, like Scalia.
Person for person, every Conservative black leader I know is superior in character and intellect to ANY American Liberal or Leftist black leader, without exception. Black leaders on the left are caricatures of the embodiment of Black-Liberal talking points. There is not an original thinker among them.
Merry Christmas, gentlemen!
A Blessed, Merry Christmas to you and yours, FRiends!
