No, seriously, this sterilize-the-wildlife idea is another symptom of the wimpification of society. It would have been better to imitate nature and hunt the excess beasts - and donate the venison to some worthy recipients, whether the homeless, women in shelters, unhorsed cowboys , or some other cause du jour. But the chosen option robs everyone of pleasure - there will be no venison, and the male deer are denied the option of, ahem, consorting with the does. They will certainly not be singing "A doe, a deer, a female deer!" this season, or any other.--
Considering the topic of the article, I thought the first word in asterisks was apropos.
I saw a similar article a couple of months ago about this in a doctors office waiting room, some Nature magazine that was so ultra liberal it turned my stomach. Sterilizing deer! Ridiculous. Get Ted Nugent out there with his buddies and turn the meat in to a food pantry. In the same magazine was an article about a young couple who found a mouse struggling in a glue trap. They felt so bad, they freed him and took him to a vet where he was treated for mites and a few other things and he became a pet. Unbelievable.
Stupid. How long til they end up on the “endangered” list, hunting them is banned, and the Democrats say you then have no legitimate reason to own a gun. This is incredibly ridiculous.

Several years ago, it became popular around here for hunters to give deer meat to homeless shelters and food pantries. Herd sizes were stable and the needy had plenty of meat. Naturally, we couldn’t have that. Shelters and pantries can only have USDA approved product now.

There is an over population in the ghettos. Breed more than deer. Forced sterilization to control the population which should be paid by the government - a different form of birth control than what is in Obamacare.
There is no accounting for the trauma of capture and later release.

Near-infinite money buys near-infinite government, and a bureaucracy that is generously funded can entertain an open-ended dream about how to expand its realm.

If they sterilize all the does, they will have no deer in a few years. Since this is funded by private donors, sounds OK to me. But I’d miss having deer around.
Question: Can’t they give birth control shots to the deer?

Actually, this issue is close to my heart, being a supporter of keeping wild horses wild. They are rounded up by the BLM, kept in excruciating inhumane conditions, and sold to kill buyers. I know many here think that’s OK, but not me. I do wonder why they don’t just sterilize them and let them live out their lives on the range. As symbols of American Freedom, one would think they matter.

Unless they continue performing surgery on animals in their garages at an adequate rate, and if the same environmental conditions persist, the population will again increase.
As the other poster said, all you need is a longer hunting season.
As population density declines deer from outside the area will move in, and they’ll be right back to square one.
I’d love to meet the white-tail deer counselors who advise the deer to be sterilized.
