Paige Stalker might be alive today had she learned about Routine Activity Theory.
But she is dead and two of her friends are critically wounded, the latest poster children for R.A.T.: White people in black neighborhoods should expect to be the victims of racial violence.
Paige was one of five teenagers from an upscale neighborhood in nearby Grosse Point who were on their way to the movies three days before Christmas when they decided to pull over and smoke marijuana in Detroit.
While they were getting a high, a black man with a high-powered rifle approached their car and fired 30 rounds into it, killing Paige.
Paige and her friends learned the hard way what in 2012 became well known in a Chicago courtroom. The case revolved around a white woman who was released from jail into a black neighborhood. Hours later, she was thrown out of the seventh-story window of a local housing project.
Her parents sued the city of Chicago, saying the city should have known their white daughter would be a victim of violence in that black neighborhood.
That was the testimony of Harvard sociology professor Robert Sampson and what the judge said when he described R.A.T. The woman “was a white female in a predominantly black, poor neighborhood (and) she had a much higher risk of predatory victimization.”
The judge said the situation was so transparently dangerous (link corrected) that Chicago police “might as well have released her into the lions’ den at the Brookfield Zoo.”
The city’s lawyers claimed the professor was guilty of racial profiling and demanded the judge throw out his testimony. Judge Frank Easterbrook scorned that argument and approved a judgment against the city for $22.5 million.

This is frightening and rather sad. I am posting this from my little village in the East of England. I have just taken the dog for a walk; its totally safe and I cannot imagine living in a place where it is dangerous to walk!
My experience of the US is confined to New York, Washington and Virginia. I found everyone warm and hospitable, regardless of race, but I suppose this was because I stayed in the popular tourist areas.
I make it a point of principle never to make political comments on events outside this country, so I won’t start now, All I can say is that America seems to be suffering from an ever widening racial divide. I can only hope that the stirrers and loonies are stopped from making any headway and that the quiet majority start to to say enough is enough.
I hope all you freepers have a merry Christmas and a happier New Year for your country than 2014.

I'm very curious as to how fewer police patrols with fewer police will make black neighborhoods safer. This is going to be an interesting experiment to observe.

You might have found your experience different in one of the larger cities in England. I live in Dover, Delaware, and feel totally safe (well, as totally safe as one can possibly be; there's always the possibility of crime no matter where you are) walking at any time of day or night. Large cities in the U.S. are problematic because the "good" elements have all fled to the suburbs, leaving the dregs behind.
The claim was that she would become a "predatory victim". The claim wasn't that she would become a "racial victim".
She was a victim of Al Stepnfetch racism.

I think the kids aren’t telling the whole truth. They went to Detroit to buy drugs and probably tried to scam the dealer who shot up the car. How many times have they done this before? If I were one of the parents I’d break up the group of friends. Obviously they’re bad for each other.
What other reason could there be, not that it matters?
The girl in Chicago was gang raped before being thrown out the window. She is still alive and needs 24 / 7 care.
Doubtful. I would bet a rather large sum this was an AR-15 or similar type rifle. He fired off a magazine and split.
As people who aren't journalists know, an AR-15 type is not a "high-powered rifle." It uses by definition a mid-power round.
I very much doubt he was using a 7mm Mag or equivalent, a truly high powered rifle.
Reminds me of a trip to Columbus MS in the mid-90s. A poster city for the new south, black and white everywhere and really cordial with one another. About 50% each.
But then I was told, after the sun goes down DO NOT cross to the south side of the tracks. Some blacks will warn you off, some will slice you to pieces.
After dark there were two towns. And they did not cross. Ever.
Both sides kept the unspoken rule.

Anyone who didn’t see this one coming just wasn’t looking, as one look at world history will show you that no country with a diverse population of different races, languages, and religion has long survived.
Countries don’t naturally form with diverse populations, and when in the past they’ve occurred it’s usually been as a result of armed conquest. These unnaturally formed countries have either melded together into a single population made up of one mixed race with one language and one religion or they’ve come apart, and they’ve usually come apart with extreme violence. The longer these diverse populations are forced to coexist with one another without mixing and becoming one, the more the hatred grows among them and the more violently they break apart, but break apart they will, or genocide will settle the issue once and for all.
Why is this and why can’t we all just get along? The truth of the matter is that we (the human race) just aren’t as civilized as we would like to think we are. Our species, Homo-sapiens-sapiens, isn’t that long “out of the trees” and the veneer of civilization is very thin, to non-existent, upon us all. We’re all carrying the genes that got us here and some of those genes carry a very basic survival instinct that has allowed us to survive thus far.
This most basic of all survival instincts is self-preservation and it’s the one that warns us to be very wary of those who are different than us, our family, and our tribe. Those who possessed this survival instinct survived and reproduced, and those who had no fear/distrust of strangers didn’t survive. Over the years, this survival instinct has been referred to as tribalism, nationalism, ethnocentrism, racism, and various other isms, but it’s an inborn instinct carried in our genes whether we like it or not.
“Mother England,” with its wide open immigration policy and its wholesale importation of Muslims, is about to learn the downside of diversity. Just try taking a walk right now through one of your Muslim communities and see how well you fare.
I was in the same town at about the same time. I have the same memories as yourself. Very nice place with wonderful people.
There and just plain ‘ol America anywhere you would have been warmly welcomed.
East London (and parts of the West End), Birmingham, Manchester, any number of places have scared me.
The "racial" problem in the US is located almost exclusively in areas that are heavily democratic, black and urban.
The racial divide is almost exclusively black in origin and location. A black person can walk through any given white neighborhood and not fear. . .
The East of England? East Anglia, perhaps? I lived in Felixstowe back in the 80’s.
Fuuny how the useful white priviledged idiots are out in front with this protest.
On the bright side, as far as I can tell, it’s white liberals who go traipsing around black neighborhoods, either to score drugs or be an angel of social justice. I mean, let’s face it: white conservatives already know about this.
