It’s windspeed that keeps the plane up though. What direction were the winds coming.

I have no knowledge of aviation stuff but what does that mean? That it went in higher elevation but in a slow speed?

Some might be common Asian names analogous to our Jones, but still. It is always a tragedy.

Antara news agency reporting that the plane was circling over Belitung to avoid the storm when it was struck by severe turbulence.

I don’t know what the minimum flying speed would be, but the thinner the air the higher it is.

Would they have been talking to the Belitung ATC?

IIRC, they said it’s monsoon season over there so there’s going to be a lot of wet weather daily. They can’t cancel all flights for weeks until the season is over. I get the feeling these storms blew up fast; that they weren’t as bad when the plane took off. Maybe they thought they could skirt the storms, not realizing how fast the system was moving.

I doubt they would have allowed the plane to take off if they knew how bad the storms were going to be.

The aircraft was between the Indonesian port of Tanjung Pandan and the town of Pontianak, in West Kalimantan on Borneo island, when it went missing, Joko Muryo Atmodjo, air transportation director at the Transport Ministry, told a news conference.

The aircraft had been flying at 32,000 feet and had asked to fly at 38,000 feet to avoid clouds, he said.

I guess Im just used to hearing on TV constantly about flights being canceled. Heard about flights this week being canceled from LA to Boston due to bad weather..don’t know who decides to cancel flights, the airline itself? I heard tonight that there were other planes in the area at the time and they are all fine, its just bad luck..10 planes fly through the same area, no problem..one comes along and ends up crashing into the ocean

Air Asia confirmed that the pilots requested deviation due to weather.

Suggests the airplane downing was weather-related.

It could be the aircraft was torn apart in flight from severe turbulence, or the engines flamed out and couldn't be restarted in time (icing, extreme water ingestion or other type of compressor stall), or there was a loss of instrumentation that the pilots could not overcome.

All three have happened before.

I looked at the times -- sunrise was at 5:49, and the last known contact was at 6:17 local. That indicates there was a visible horizon at the time of the crash, which helps rule out a JFK-Jr.-style disorientation into the ocean (though one pilot's disorientation and confusion doomed another Airbus, Air France 447).

And we’re ever so grateful for those tires.

I go to car shows every year and have seen many beautiful old “wagon wheel” cars. Their wheels make my back ache to look at them and think about riding in one of those cars.

Have been looking at other news so not on top of this...I won’t be surprised if it’s proven the weather created a situation and the pilot made the best decision he knew.

Of course then you’ll have all the arm-chair pilots telling us what he should have done and who is to blame.

Bottom line is a plane “unintentionally” crashed and people lost their lives.....will be interesting to see if any survived...though it’s been hours.

They don't teach these idiots not to fly intentionally fly into severe thunderstorms?

They needed to turn around or deviate to Sampit.

Another screw up by a lousy airline.
