This may seem to be a rather obscure topic, but it popped up while I was reading Helen Smiths musings on whether or not pornography should be made illegal and the long term, detrimental effects that it can have on marriage. As a subset of that discussion, she touched on David Friedmans book, Laws Order: What Economics Has to Do with Law and Why It Matters. In it, Friedman makes the following observation on prostitution in general and the specific side effects it can have when married men pay for sex outside of marriage. (I specify men here only because incidents of women engaging prostitutes are so rare as to be a statistical anomaly. In theory this would apply to either gender.)

When you get up at 2:30 AM, you just sit down so you don’t have to turn on the light and you don’t miss.
Leave the seat down and dribble on it.....then she won’t have a problem when you leave it up.
(maybe that’s why she left? see previous post)
No. It would give the scorned spouse another avenue for revenge.
An effort to track down deadbeat dads/moms for non-support of their offspring would be time and effort well-spent. Any woman collecting welfare when they know who the “baby-daddy” actually is, should be charged with defrauding the government.
Adultery is a factor in Homicides. Betrayal suddenly revealed or confirmed is a great emotional shock. If it does not result in a killing it does result in great emotional distress and social cynicism. It is second only to murder in its seriousness. Adultery does cause great social harm. Make it a misdemeanor thus showing social disapproval. (Yes I know there are people for whom infidelity does not matter. They are rare sociopaths.)
There was a lot of adultery in Rome in the ruling class. It was Augustus who got the law passed. It was one of his pet peeves. Also gave a chance to exile or kill offenders he didn’t like.
On the toilet seat issue, LOGIC dictates that each person leave it where they used it, i.e., up for men, down for women. When you need to use the toilet, adjust it as necessary. Women ought to look before they sit, and put the seat down if needed.
HOWEVER, in the real world, women, for whatever reason, gripe about the seat being left up. So, in my house, as a matter of COURTESY, I raise the seat when I need it, then lower it when done. Takes just a second, and keeps peace in the house.
Yes. Its a form of thievery and violation of a public oath.
This is a stupid statement. Are you actually saying that murder, theft, and other crimes are not part of one's morality?
Of course you can regulate morality. You can't regulate how people feel or think, yet.
Traditional divorce law—where the divorcing spouse had to prove fault—more or less presumes adultery is wrong. No fault divorce—which lawyers love, since its not so messy....basically was giving up on seeing adultery as wrong.
every single law on the book is a law regulating morality
the fact that people think marriage means absolutely nothing, even on FR, shows how far down the toilet the world has gone
Wow, that makes me really angry. Talk about injustice. She left you, she should have to pay for a half-time housekeeper and cook for you (men do cook and do share chores). Time for equal rights for men. Especially when it comes to being the father of an unborn child.
and yet you do not think all the pushing of degeneracy and deviancy is all part of the same terrible trend?4
No pause at all here.
What's the conflict if "what is 'wrong'" ultimately is a matter of opinion?
Depending on what your definition of "is" is...?
The very definition of the words is..to break faith.
About 90% of it in the bible refers to adultery against the Almighty-breaking faith.
The fact is..this government has committed adultery for years and has made it into a science-practice makes perfect in that case.
Another bride Another June
Another sunny honeymoon
Another season, another reason
For makin’ whoopee
A lot of shoes, a lot of rice
The groom is nervous he answers twice
It’s really killin’ that he’s so willin’
To make whoopee
Picture a little love nest
Down where the roses cling
Picture the same sweet love nest
Think what a year can bring
He’s washing dishes and baby clothes
He’s so ambitious he even sews
But don’t forget folks that’s what you get folks
For makin’ whoopee
Another year or maybe less
What’s this I hear? Well can’t you guess?
She fells neglected and he’s suspected
Of makin’ whoopee
She sits alone most every night
He doesn’t phone her he doesn’t write
He says he’s busy but she say’s “is he?”
He’s makin’ whoopee
He doesn’t make much money
Only five thousand per
Some judge who thinks he’s funny
Says you’ll pay six to her
He says now judge suppose I fail
The judge says budge right into jail
You better keep her I think it’s cheaper
Then makin’ whoopee
You better keep her
I know it’s cheaper than makin’ whoopee
Lol.
As for adultery, it seem to me best to treat it as a tort or civil wrong, as with any breach of contract, rather than a criminal offense.
I think it boils down to the fact there are things we know and things we believe.
Despite the twisting, tortured philosophy of the Atheists, it is evident to most people that there is a Creator who set the world up in a certain fashion according to His will. This is the God and the Natural Law referred to by the founding fathers. The universal rights to life, liberty, property, independence, freedom from oppression, etc... are things that anyone can see by looking at God’s creation and applying logic.
The rules or customs (rights and wrongs) of the Christian Bible are on another level of understanding God and can be subject to individual’s belief or lack thereof.
I think the founders said that in all cases the Natural rights should be protected and the enforcement of Biblical rights and wrongs are up to interpretation by the people.
This mess is breaking me. I’ve had to sell our boat to afford an attorney (and she got half of what I got for it), I’m having to make her car payments AND send her temporary spousal support. When all the bills are paid I have very little left over. But I’ve found one good thing about the mortgage being under water........
I can’t wait for the divorce to become final.
Adultery can be legal grounds for divorce.
I did not say that. Indicating a worse fear doesn’t negate disapproval with the basic trend.
