Why New North Carolina Measles Cases Worries Health Officials

A case of red measles, also known as Rubeola, was diagnosed earlier this week in Moorseville, North Carolina -- worrying health officials and highlighting the renewed threat of measles in this country.

The infected person was unvaccinated and had recently returned from a trip to India confirmed Rebecca Carter, the public information officer for Mecklenburg county. Carter said she could not release any additional details such as the age or sex of the person due to patient confidentiality.

Dr. William Schaffner said this case is no trivial matter, warning that measles is highly contagious, spreading easily through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and sore throat followed by a rash that spreads all over the body. It can also lead to death, he added.

“People without gray hair forget that before vaccines became available, measles used to kill approximately 400 children a year in this country,” he said.

Before the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine series became common practice there were hundreds of thousands of cases each year in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevent reported. The disease has come roaring back as more people refuse or delay immunization, Schaffner noted.

Could Obama's "undocumenteds" have anything to do with this?

In this case it seems unlikely, unless the patient is illegal. It would appear he/she picked this up in India.

CDC admitted disease imported as states data reveals illegal immigrant links

In straightforward defiance against the White House position of non-transparency, previous communication from the Center for Disease Control discovered Tuesday acknowledged that 97 percent of the measles found in United States this year could be attributed to “importations from at least 18 countries.”

Could Obama's "undocumenteds" have anything to do with this?

Perhaps. But, I am encountering far too many native born Americans of late with an anti-vaccine mentality, based upon a number of irrational fears such as, the people catch the flu from the flu vaccine, the MMR vaccine causes autism, AIDS orinally came from the small-pox vaccine, vaccines are nothing but a government scam to pump the pharmacutical industrty, etc. I have heard and read these concerns from otherwise intelligent, conservative people, crunchy liberal extremists, Hollyweird celebs, soccermoms, and even Freepers, many of whom are too young to have experieced the death and suffering that these diseases caused before they became easily preventable through wide-spread vaccination. That's why many of these killer diseases are re-emerging.

A non-issue if native born Americans do the smart thing and get themselves and their kids vaccinated.

Without regard to this ONE case being sourced in India...

...if you bookend these two graphs, the problem becomes apparent.

http://www.historyofvaccines.org/content/graph-us-measles-cases

http://www.cdc.gov/measles/cases-outbreaks.html

And we all know how factual the past decade's illegal immigration numbers are...

...the 2011-2014 column should be off the chart (along with the past decade).

Great! I live in Mooresville.

And why is the public information officer for Mecklenburg county involved?

Mooresville is in Iredell County and we have a County Health Dept.

Yep. Lived there in the early 2000s.

I wonder if it could have been someone on a missionary trip? And, isn’t Statesville the county seat? Probably not as well equipped to handle something like this compared to Charlotte.

“Great! I live in Mooresville.”

No need to worry. Article says this happened in “Moorseville”. Darn if I can find Moorseville on the map though.

Excellent post!

People look at the problems caused by the vaccine, which do exist, and ignore the benefits as if those happen by themselves.

If a large enough percentage of people are vaccinated, even the unvaccinated are protected. But there is a tipping point at which the pathogen gets loose again

I would suggest the hordes moving there from Maryland are the culprits.

And as one of those from a slightly younger generation, I’ll give at least one answer as to why we have a distrust for the required immunizations.

The government having a history of testing drugs and warfare out on its citizens. I have read the various reports and do not trust our government, nor others in the world, when it comes to them telling us what vaccinations we must give our children.

Here is the link to just one of those reports: http://www.gao.gov/assets/110/105708.pdf

A more recent case is that of the Texas Governor Rick Perry mandating that all young girls receive the HPV immunization after receiving kick backs from the pharm mfg to do so. He was forced to reverse that mandate, only after parents became aware and took action to do so.

It’s a catch-22, I realize. The government has given us reason to distrust them and now we have to filter through so much misinformation from all sides of the debate in order to make the best decision for our children.

I guess I shouldn’t worry about it and just trust the CDC to tell me what to do with my children and pray for the best?

That was My thought as well. You would think that any Missionary would be sure to get all shots before going.

Yes on Statesville.

Them commies in CLT just want any excuse to take over where they can for Tax Base. They tried last year to get Huntersville and Cornelius to let them take over the 911 Dispatch System. They got a BIG NO on that!

About 30 miles north of Charlotte on I-77 just across the Mecklenburg/Iredell County Line at Lake Norman.

Perry bashing?? Seriously? He was a decent Governor, but he has plenty of faults. This was the one that ticked me off the most.

He was way too cozy with Merck and got caught at it.

Paranoia? Maybe. I’d rather have a bit of paranoia as opposed to following lock step in line with the masses.

Fluoride? Good point. Who are you going to trust? Guess we should be good little sheep and trust the government and our corporate citizens to do what is best for us.

Your “logic” escapes me. Highly effective vaccines for the flu, mumps, measles, rubella, whooping cough, polio, etc., have been around since the 1950s and 1960s. The vaccines have been so effective that many of these killer and debilitating diseases have been nearly wiped out and practically non-existent in the United States until the very recent resurgence. Perhaps the resurgence is due in part to uncontrolled immigration. But I suspect that it more to do with wacky parents and irrational fears and conspiracy theories that have infected all points on the political spectrum.

Also, there is a big difference between the forced immunization for HPV, which is spread nearly always through voluntary, unprotected sexual contact given the fact that the immunization is statistically effective against only a few strains of HPV of which only a very small number will develop into cancer. In contrast, mumps, measles, rubella, whooping cough, influenza, are highly contagious and left unchecked, have the potential to kill or debilitate millions of people in a short period of time
