Today’s outrage: Sarah Palin posts photo of son standing on the family dog

Is this an actual fake outrage, where partisans pretend to be offended at something to play up the supposed inhumanity of their opponents, or is it a fake fake outrage, where only a few even bother to pretend but the media seizes on it anyway because it’s a “controversy,” sort of, and they’re bored? For the moment, it looks like it’s being pushed not so much by American liberals but by foreign press — the Independent, an Irish newspaper, and the always buzz-hungry Daily Mail. Turns out Facebook commenters grumbling at a former VP nominee now qualifies as international news. Who knew?

Good news for Slate, though, as this takes care of January 2nd in next year’s “Year of Outrage” round-up.

Happy New Year!

May 2015 see every stumbling block turned into a stepping stone on the path forward. Trig just reminded me. He, determined to help wash dishes with an oblivious mama not acknowledging his signs for “up!”, found me and a lazy dog blocking his way. He made his stepping stone.

- Sarah Palin

Click for pics. American news outlets like the New York Daily News and The Blaze picked it up this morning, with a full-blown Twitterstorm now shaping up as lefties and righties wearily assume their designated roles. I’m going to guess that if little Trig’s weight caused the dog any pain, the dog would have made that clear to him in ways that dogs are wont to do but I’ll defer to experts in the comments. In the meantime, let’s pray that the number of hideously overwrought Smart Takes this incident produces remains small:

Eagerly awaiting Andrew Sullivan's smart take on what Trig Palin putting his foot on a dog means for the future of our republic.

— Popehat (@Popehat) January 2, 2015

To answer my question, I think this still qualifies as a “fake fake outrage” for the moment but has potential to become an “actual fake outrage” simply because there’s a dog involved. Remember how the story of Mitt Romney putting his dog in a kennel on the family car’s roof during a trip years ago became a thing, at least on the left, during the 2012 campaign? Stories of possible animal abuse by Republicans grab them, I think, because they support the liberal narrative that conservatives are heartless. They’re a Window onto the Conservative Soul in a way that, oh, say, abortion without restriction is most certainly not a window onto the left-wing soul. And of course they disdain Palin singularly for a mess of reasons, so any chance to score a point on her is a chance that must be taken. It’s really a perfect post-New-Year Friday story — nothing else is going on in the news, everyone wants to get back to holiday revelry before the deep-breath plunge into normal order in January, and one of their favorite whipping boys has given them something to chatter about. I figure they’ll reach “actual fake outrage” intensity by mid-afternoon today, with the storm dissipating this evening as everyone eases into the weekend and stops thinking about this even a little.

Instead of a photo, I would have been smacking and lecturing my kid.

I doubt that Palin family has to "smack" Trig as you recommend.

I think that they can enjoy this sweet moment, and take care of teaching Trig, and protect the dog, all at once.

Great catch regarding the DeGeneres pics; it’s the EXACT same thing as Palin’s pic, but the usual liberal double-standard applies.

this is a tad more outrageous ... yet the media not only ignores it, they will also defend it

From July no less, only months ago, and none of us ever heard of them.

Such an honest post onyx, given your support. Wow, I have not seen such a good post in a while, you’ve made my day.

Parents know that such instruction is sometimes very easy, sometimes extremely difficult, typically somewhere in between.

I remember two Bible verses, which I include for lurkers/readers generally (as my knowledge of the situation begins and ends with the picture, I hardly can comment on this specifically).

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

“A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.”

I agree about treating animals. The first time I did something not kosher to an animal I was about 5. I will NEVER forget the punishment for it either. I love animals, especially all of my friendly Deer buddies that are ALL over up here! Dogs are No. 1 tho! My remarks to Al should have been worded better. My main intent was let these PDS’ers that were going to invariably be slamming Sarah, (or attempting to slam her), as a ‘bad parent’, ‘not to smart’, ‘to dumb to hold future office’ etc. etc. etc. that it would not fly. We are watching! Should Trig be standing on his Doggy? No, absolutely not. I’m sure Sarah and Trig will have a talk about this. Sarah is human and makes mistakes like we all do. Posting this pic was just a very minor error in judgement. Sarah probably had he camera nearby, saw Trig and his Doggy, thought ‘cute!’ snapped the pics and then without any more thought just uploaded them to the internet. Watch though, the PDS’ers are gonna have a field day with this! I’ll bet the DUmp is in full meltdown mode right now. I think I will slum on over there and snoop around.

Aw, thank you so much, dearest PieterCasparzen.
Coming from you, it means a lot to me.
Thank you also for the two Bible verses.
God bless and keep you and everyone you love.

Oh yes, you are so right. The "outrage" is overwhelming because it's Sarah Palin!

Just LOOK at the titles of some of the articles from several "newsy-floozie-on cue-zee" outlets.

Dear Lord, you'd think little Trig had stabbed the dog with a kitchen knife.

God bless and keep you and God bless little Trig and his wonderful dog.

No harm done, and perhaps a lesson learned.

I recommended NO such thing. As you know, I said MY kid, and none of mine had Down's Syndrome.

The responses of too many forget that fact. Did any of them ever hear of service dogs who will gladly do just what we are seeing?
A dog will not let itself be badly injured by a child.
Is this dog maybe a service dog for that mentally and physically challenged child?

Sheesh, but your concern were it really matters!

Oh my God. Do any of those folks on FB who made negative comments about kids on the dogs ever think how amazingly stupid they sound?

A big dog will just get up and walk away from a family member who is bothering them. The faces on all those dogs shown do NOT show pain at all, in fact quite the opposite.
They are glad to be interacting with the pack and nothing more.

The picture of Trig was the same way.. actually he was bored and just waiting for whatever food fell to the floor from a child rooting around on a kitchen counter.

that’s about the stupidest reply I’ve seen on FR this year.

You obviously haven't been following my replies.
